The coach dissects missed open threes, lack of paint penetration, and defensive pressure that stifled the Tar Heels' struggling offense against NC State.

North Carolina Coach Explains Offensive Troubles Against NC State

Without Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar ruled out, North Carolina was without two of its best scorers against NC State on Tuesday night.

The Wolfpack took advantage, earning an 82-58 win over the Tar Heels in front of 19,367 fans at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

UNC shot just 32 percent from the field and 15 percent from beyond the arc. Zayden High and Jarin Stevenson tied for a team-high of 13 points for the Tar Heels.

During his postgame news conference, North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis said the three-ball was a focus for his team on Tuesday night. He knew going 5-of-33 from three-point land wasn't going to cut it.

"We just couldn't generate consistent paint touches, putting two on the ball, and being able to generate consistent, really good shots," Davis said, via 247 Sports.

"That being said, of the 33 threes that we took, it was a good portion that were wide open, and we just didn't make them. And so going into this game, we knew that we needed the ability to be able to shoot from three, and we just didn't do it tonight."

The Wolfpack didn't make it easy on their visiting rivals. NC State earned seven steals. UNC recorded none.

"I mean, one, you want to give credit to State's defense," Davis said. "They've got... They do a really good job of getting the passing lanes and swiping and getting steals and deflections.

"And so we knew that we needed to be sound with the basketball on the offensive end and make the easy play. We just couldn't, outside of Jarin and Zayden... generate any good shots consistently, whether it was off dribble drive, pick and roll, DHO, or isolations."

Davis is hopeful Vessaar, out with the flu, will be able to rejoin the team soon to give the offense some much-needed relief.

It's unclear when Wilson will play again as he adjusts to the cast on his non-shooting hand.

No. 16 North Carolina will next travel to play Syracuse on Saturday. The Tar Heels will then have a big matchup at home on Monday when they host No. 21 Louisville.

The offense needs to be much better to win those games, Wilson on the court or not.
