North Carolina Tar Heels executive Michael Lombardi just delivered a strong statement on the team's recruiting efficiency.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were hit with criticism left, right and center last offseason due to the million and one stories surrounding Bill Belichick, and general manager Michael Lombardi is tired of it.

During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Lombardi blasted North Carolina's haters and got very specific in his defense of the program, zeroing in on the Tar Heels' efficiency when it comes to recruiting.

"We did not lose one single recruit to another team," Lombardi said. "Now, they tried. A lot of that, to me, was the dedication of our recruiting class, and that’s what I think gives all of everybody in this program the lift that we need."

Belichick has put together a top-20 recruiting class heading into 2026, and evidently, the atmosphere has been very professional when hosting/visiting recruits.

That definitely flies in the face of the notion that UNC has turned into some sort of side show ever since Belichick stepped on the scene back in December 2024.

"Look, let’s face it. If you’re not worth a darn, they’re not going to attack you," Lombardi added. "Some programs are not worth attacking. They’re going to attack us. We expect it. It’s all good. We’ve been in the arena before. We don’t listen to the noise. We focus on what we have to focus on and we move forward."

Of course, it's not like everything with chocolates and rainbows for North Carolina during Belichick's debut campaign.

The Tar Heels went just 4-8 last season, suffering several embarrassing blowout defeats along the way. They failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 2018, and while UNC didn't have any recruits stolen, it did watch a bunch of its players bolt via the transfer portal.

North Carolina did add some intriguing pieces in the portal itself, and its rather impressive incoming recruiting class should result in a better season in 2026.

However, we would all be kidding ourselves if we didn't think there was reason for some level of concern in Chapel Hill going into next year, especially considering that Belichick had never coached on the collegiate level previously.

We'll see if Belichick and Lombardi can prove the doubters wrong next fall.
