North Carolina Gets Good News on Pursuit of Five-Star Dylan Mingo cover image

North Carolina’s pursuit of five-star prospect Dylan Mingo continues to gain tons of momentum as his recruitment enters its final stage.

For years, Mingo has remained one of the top players in the 2026 class, drawing national attention for his ability to impact the game on both sides of the basketball. While several programs have stayed involved throughout the process, recent buzz suggests the Tar Heels have positioned themselves firmly in the center of the race.

According to Braulio Perez of Keeping It Heel, North Carolina is now emerging as one of the two true finalists, alongside Baylor, as Mingo nears a decision.

“Will Mingo be joining him in the lineup? That's what everyone is wondering, as the fellow 5-star talent is down to UNC, Baylor, Penn State and Washington,” Perez wrote. “However, recent buzz suggests that this is going to come down to either Baylor or North Carolina.”

That development is significant for Hubert Davis and his staff, who have looked to build their relationship back to where it needs to be in the New York City/New Jersey area. Mingo’s brother plays at Penn State, though, so it’s interesting to hear that Perez doesn’t expect him to land there.

The Tar Heels have remained involved in Mingo’s recruitment, even as early projections leaned elsewhere. At one point, Penn State appeared to have the inside track, but that narrative may be shifting considering how badly it has played. Perez also spoke about Baylor, which has been decent.

“Previously, Mingo was predicted to sign with Baylor, but things have cooled off there a bit,” Perez added.

If the relationship has slowed down, it should open the door for North Carolina to make an east push. Perez added why Tar Heel fans have reason for optimism.

“Has the door been opened for UNC to land him after? That's what people are hoping for, as Mingo and Adams suiting up together next campaign sure would be a ton of fun to watch.”

The possibility of pairing Mingo with Maximo Adams has turned into excitement among the fanbase. The duo would give UNC one of the most dynamic young backcourts in the country, but the Tar Heels would have to add others, too, as they don’t want to go into next year with two freshmen on the roster who will be dealing with ball-handling duties.
