North Carolina basketball recruiting will need some help with what we’ve seen this year. However, it doesn’t seem to be too easy, according to the latest reports.
According to Joe Tipton of On3, Dylan Mingo, one of the Tar Heels’ top remaining targets who had been expected to announce his college commitment on Jan. 22, decided to push that timeline back. It remains uncertain when he’ll commit.
“It’s just getting things, you know, set up and confirmed…
“I mean, there’s still more basketball to watch. Conference play just hit, and that’s probably the peak of college basketball besides March Madness.”
While the delay could be a good or bad thing, it doesn’t appear to be due to any hesitation toward North Carolina,
Mingo has continued to speak very highly about the program as he works through one of the biggest decisions of his life. Mingo made it clear that North Carolina remains very much in the mix, emphasizing the program’s history, legacy and the meaning that comes with playing for UNC
“Honestly, I feel like North Carolina, as a kid, I feel like pretty much everybody has to dream of playing there one day. It’s a prestigious program, so just seeing how many players in the past have put on the jersey, Michael Jordan, Joel Berry, players like that, have just done great there. And if I do commit there, I would love to see me go on that same path one day,” he said, per Tipton.
For many recruits, the appeal of UNC means more than money, although I have a feeling this could be about that, mainly from the Penn State side. I get that Mingo’s brother, Kayden, goes to Penn State, but it still has to come in with a decent offer to land him.
Regardless, UNC still seems to be in the mix, and that’s a good thing. If Mingo wanted to play with his brother, it feels like he would’ve already made that decision.
Whether the decision comes days or weeks from now, we’ll find out soon. Given how poorly the team has played, it’s possible that he wants to see UNC improve before making a final decision.
