Off-field scandals and a disastrous debut season have legendary coach Bill Belichick facing a brutal ultimatum: win immediately or force the North Carolina Tar Heels to pay a massive buyout.

North Carolina Has Looming $10 Million Decision to Make on Bill Belichick More Videos

The rapidly approaching Aug. 29 matchup between TCU and North Carolina feels like a must-win contest for second-year head coach Bill Belichick.

After a 4-8 season, Belichick rectified a couple of mistakes from his first year, hiring offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino to replace Freddie Kitchens and producing better results on the recruiting trail.

Still, UNC will play TCU, Clemson, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Duke by Oct. 17. The Tar Heels will be lucky to be near .500 by then. The Tar Heels will still have ACC contests against Miami and Louisville.

Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today named Belichick as a college football coach on the hot seat heading into the season. The 4-8 record in 2025 was bad enough, but the headlines for UNC have been brutal since Belichick arrived at Chapel Hill.

Toppmeyer suggested it would take $10 million to fire Belichick, which is approximately the coach's annual salary.

"Belichick hasn’t just been bad for North Carolina. He’s been a national embarrassment," Toppmeyer wrote. "There was his bizarre interview with CBS before he ever coached a game. There’s the persistent drama with Belichick’s 25-year-old girlfriend, aka his 'Muse,' who’s waged a crusade against the university.

"Then, Belichick’s GM got placed on administrative leave. Belichick might be the GOAT in the NFL, but he’s a joke in college football, and it’s hard to justify playing the long game with a 74-year-old coach. Either he wins now, or North Carolina can fork over $10 million to fire him after this season and cut its losses."

If there was any coach in football history who could right the wrongs in one season, I'd take Belichick. The 74-year-old coach was still the envy of some college football coaches for the way he made adjustments week-to-week last season.

Still, North Carolina's roster leaves a lot to be desired. Belichick got the best of a few New England Patriots teams that lacked star power.

Belichick will give the upcoming season his best shot on the field. The best way to for the negative headlines to disappear is to win. After all, winning is why UNC hired him in the first place, and the stakes for a losing season should be a firing.
