Bill Belichick faces a defining moment at UNC. Defeating Miami on Halloween could silence critics, validate his $10 million salary, and prove his pro-style brilliance translates to Saturdays.
North Carolina is an afterthought in both the ACC and college football this season.
That wasn't expected after the Tar Heels hired Bill Belichick at $10 million per season to replace legendary head coach Mack Brown. But after a 4-8 season, UNC and Belichick have much to prove.
Belichick's credibility has taken a huge hit this offseason, with some in the national media suggesting he's the worst head coach in the ACC.
However, Belichick needs a learning curve after joining the college ranks for the first time in his coaching career in 2025. He'll have an opportunity to prove he can coach at the college level this season.
UNC will have a more challenging schedule this season than they had in 2025.
On one hand, the schedule will make it less likely the Tar Heels will compete for the ACC championship and make a College Football Playoff push. On the other, Belichick has a chance to put the college football world on notice with a win over an elite program.
Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports listed North Carolina as a trap game for Miami on Halloween. The Hurricanes will travel to Chapel Hill on Oct. 31 trying to return to the CFP, and Belichick should have an upset on his mind when he takes on Mario Cristobal, anointed by many as the best coach in the ACC.
"Outside of the Nov. 7 contest at Notre Dame, Miami is likely to be favored in all of its games in 2026," Lassan wrote.
"It’s tough to find an obvious trap game for the Hurricanes, but coach Mario Cristobal’s team travels to Chapel Hill before that massive showdown against the Fighting Irish."
Miami is just another giant for UNC to face early in the season amid TCU, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Pitt.
North Carolina doesn't even have to have a winning record against those teams to show progress. Belichick needs to win one or two games to ignite some belief at North Carolina that better things are possible.
Losing all four of those games would doom the season early, and doubts on Belichick's future with the school would dominate the headlines.
