Fresh off a signature upset over Pittsburgh, the legendary coach shifts his focus to a high-stakes rivalry showdown as he fights to solidify the Tar Heels’ postseason future.
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick has given terse responses this season after wins and losses.
Belichick is ready to put the past, even the immediate past, behind him and focus on the next opponent. On Saturday, Belichick earned his biggest win as head coach of the Tar Heels, knocking off No. 25 Pittsburgh 21-17 in front of a crowd of 51,416 at Acrisure Stadium.
During his postgame interview on the ABC broadcast, Belichick was asked about what was next for UNC after earning what appeared to be a breakthrough over the Panthers.
"Yeah, we'll just get ready for Duke," Belichick said.
That's a good mantra for Belichick and North Carolina to have. There will be little time to celebrate for the 3-2 Tar Heels. North Carolina will next go on the road to play a 4-1 Duke program that lost 28-25 to Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Given the negative headlines that have surrounded the university since training camp, Belichick and his staff desperately need to pile up wins this fall to make the case the athletic department shouldn't go in a new direction.
A win over Duke would help Belichick make that case. UNC would go 4-2 with a rivalry win over the Blue Devils. With Syracuse coming up the week after, the Tar Heels have an opportunity to be 5-2 before hosting No. 4 Miami on Halloween.
Before the season, it was thought highly unlikely that UNC would be 3-2 at this point in the season. But Belichick and his team are pulling a surprise.
North Carolina looking better
UNC earned a big 15-10 win to start the season against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The Tar Heels fumbled an opportunity to put Clemson away. Out of a bye, UNC proved a tough out for No. 3 Notre Dame in a 37-26 finish in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina is much better than the 4-8 team in 2025. The talent Belichick brought in for Year 2 has allowed the team to be more competitive and opportunistic.
On Saturday, UNC took advantage of a Pitt team that was down to backup quarterback Holden Geriner. Belichick had a good plan against the quarterback, forcing Geriner to throw two interceptions.
North Carolina looks like a bowl team at this point in the season. UNC still has offensive problems. The Tar Heels rushed for just 20 yards on 25 attempts. Billy Edwards tossed two picks.
Still, the defense is good enough to carry the team, and North Carolina could wind up being high in the ACC standings at the end of the year.
