North Carolina Legend Drake Maye on Shoulder: 'Not Trying to Lie'

Former North Carolina star Drake Maye is set to become the youngest quarterback to start in a Super Bowl since Dan Marino did so with the Miami Dolphins.

If the New England Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, he'll become the youngest quarterback to ever do it.

However, Maye is battling a shoulder injury. The issue became a major storyline following the Patriots’ 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

However, Maye is battling a shoulder injury. The issue became a major storyline following the Patriots 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

During his news conference on Thursday morning, Maye provided an update on his shoulder, saying he feels great. He promised he's not trying to bluff for strategic reasons.

“I’m not trying to lie to you guys when I say I’m feeling great,” Maye said, via Pro Football Talk. “I’m feeling great, and looking forward to getting out there today. Another day of practice, we got one tomorrow, and feeling pretty good.”

On Monday, New England head coach Mike Vrabel offered a vague update on Maye, saying he looked good in practice but can't really know for sure how the 2024 No. 3 pick actually feels.

Still, Vrabel believes the Patriots are having a good week of practice.

"He spoke for himself on how he feels," Vrabel said, via the Patriots. "I can't determine how he feels. I know that practice yesterday was good for him and for everybody to get out there and get moving around.

"We appreciate everybody at Stanford for providing us with the facility that we have. So, I think we got the week off to a great start."

On Monday, Maye said he believes the shoulder won't be an issue for the Super Bowl.

"I'm feeling good. I'll be just fine," Maye said. "I think I turned a corner landing on the flight, felt good from the flight, and throwing out there today. I really had no doubt in being 100 percent for the game. It's the Super Bowl.

"You get two weeks to prepare for it. Do whatever you have to do to get it right and I've got confidence and feel good," Maye said. "I threw a good bit (on Monday). I threw as much as I would in a practice and it felt great."

Until Maye throws the ball on Sunday, questions about the shoulder will still abound for the Patriots.
