The legendary coach’s Super Bowl pedigree is colliding with harsh reality as underwhelming on-field results stall the North Carolina Tar Heels' momentum and leave their 2027 recruiting class trailing.
Bill Belichick learned firsthand how important recruiting is at the college level during his first season with North Carolina.
Belichick reportedly went after the same pool of players Group of 6 coaches wanted before the 2025 season. The 4-8 result last season might explain how that went.
To Belichick's credit, UNC recruited much better for 2026, but they're off to a slow start for the 2027 class. Per 247 Sports, the Tar Heels had the No. 22 class overall for 2026.
Cody Nagel of CBS Sports is giving UNC a wake-up call for where Belichick's staff is at in the early summer for the class of 2027. North Carolina ranks No. 46 nationally but 13th in the ACC.
He's worried that any hype Belichick brought to UNC after winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots has worn off at this point.
"The Bill Belichick recruiting buzz wore off pretty quickly," Nagel wrote. "Around this time last year, there was real momentum around North Carolina, with the Tar Heels sitting inside the top 25 nationally for the 2026 cycle before eventually finishing No. 19. But whatever juice came with Belichick's arrival has cooled after last season's underwhelming on-field product.
"Now, North Carolina sits in the bottom tier of the ACC despite already holding 16 commitments. The Tar Heels' average rating per commit ranks just 12th in the conference, and only one current pledge -- four-star receiver Amare Patterson -- is a Top247 prospect."
Coming off a 4-8 season, it's no wonder some recruits want to hit the pause button before committing to UNC.
Belichick has an opportunity to prove to recruits that he can build a winner at the college level by overperforming with the talent he has on the roster this season. If UNC makes a run at the ACC title, commits will certainly follow.
Of course, the opposite is true. North Carolina faces a much more difficult schedule this season than they had in 2025. If the Tar Heels have another losing season, it might become extremely difficult for Belichick to turn the tide before Year 3.
