North Carolina's early tournament exit sparks urgent discussions. A looming decision could redefine the program's coaching landscape amid player meetings and transfer portal preparations.

North Carolina's Hubert Davis Hold Meeting With Team: Report

The situation between North Carolina and head coach Hubert Davis is in flux this weekend following the team's early ouster in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

Despite trailing by 14 points with less than eight minutes remaining in the second half, No. 11 seed VCU hung in to defeat No. 6 seed North Carolina 82-78 in overtime.

The loss was crushing to a UNC program that was expected to at least win one game, even without star Caleb Wilson, who suffered a season-ending broken thumb injury earlier in the month.

Per Pete Thamel of ESPN,  North Carolina is in talks about parting ways with Davis in the near future. In the meantime, Davis had a meeting with his players, something that is key before the transfer portal opens on April 7.

"North Carolina officials are in discussions with coach Hubert Davis about his future at the school, sources told ESPN, with a decision on his status and potential exit plan expected to unfold in the upcoming days," Thamel wrote.

"Davis met with his UNC team Saturday afternoon in the wake of No. 6-seeded UNC's upset loss to No. 11 VCU in the first round of the men's NCAA tournament Thursday. The team meeting did not offer any clarity on Davis' future, according to sources."

One interesting nugget Thamel dropped in was that the program does not plan to label any parting with Davis as a "firing." Davis apparently has earned a special status at UNC as a former player, assistant and head coach.

During his news conference on Thursday night, Davis didn't want to answer a question about North Carolina's shortcoming in the first round, saying he felt bad for his players.

"Yeah, that's a big-thinking question, and I apologize, I'm just not there right now," Davis said. "Just really sad that we're not continuing to play and to move forward because I have loved and enjoyed this team.

"I enjoy and love all of them, but I've just really enjoyed coaching this team. I really wanted this group and these kids to experience more. But other than that, I'm just thinking about these guys and the rest of the guys that are in the locker room."

It remains to be seen if Davis or those players in the locker room will return for the 2026-27 campaign. North Carolina is aggressively looking to make big changes after falling short this spring.
