The quarterback position has been an issue for Bill Belichick since he took over as North Carolina Tar Heels head coach in December 2024, and it remains a largely unanswered question heading into 2026.
Yes, North Carolina plucked former Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards in the transfer portal, but Edwards has been generally unimpressive throughout his collegiate career. Things with Gio Lopez did not exactly work out, either.
Not only that, but the Tar Heels lost former four-star recruit Bryce Baker via the transfer portal, removing a potential future option for UNC.
Yes, North Carolina was able to land four-star 2026 signal-caller Travis Burgess, which is significant, but the Tar Heels are still in flux under center.
But Belichick is doing everything to ensure that UNC's quarterback conundrum does not last much longer. Not only did he bag Burgess for 2026, but he is making headway on four-star 2028 quarterback Lukas Prock.
Prock recently revealed on social media that he received an offer from North Carolina, making it the 17th offer he has landed in total.

Rivals currently has Prock leaning toward Ohio State, but this is obviously still very early in his recruitment process. It also has him listed as the 24th-best quarterback in the class of 2028.
The Tar Heels boast a top-20 recruiting class heading into 2026 and have already secured commitments from three 2027 prospects, including four-star athlete Marquis Bryant. UNC has yet to land any commitments for 2028.
North Carolina went just 4-8 in Belichick's debut campaign, suffering a handful of embarrassing blowout losses along the way.
It also marked the first time that the Tar Heels did not qualify for a bowl game since 2018, so it certainly wasn't the rosiest start for Belichick.
But in fairness, the 73-year-old didn't have a chance to properly build a roster last season. Now, he is getting that opportunity, so we will see if UNC makes some significant progress going into next season.
We'll also see if Chapel Hill starts to become a hotbed for some of the top recruits in the country.
