North Carolina Tar Heels star Caleb Wilson will reportedly miss some time due to injury.
There have been few players in college basketball this season better than North Carolina Tar Heels freshman forward Caleb Wilson.
Due to his strong performance so far this season, the standout freshman has been expected to be a top-five pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. He has also helped lead the Tar Heels to a 19-5 record and the No. 11 ranking in the country at the time of this writing.
Unfortunately, some brutal news has come out regarding Wilson's current health status.
According to a statement from North Carolina, Wilson has suffered a fracture in his left hand. The injury occurred in the first half of Tuesday's game against the Miami Hurricanes.
Here is what the statement from the Tar Heels had to say:
"University of North Carolina freshman forward Caleb Wilson is out with a fracture in his left hand, an injury he suffered in the first half of Tuesday's game at Miami. X-rays taken during the game were negative, and he returned to play later in the second half vs. the Hurricanes, but additional imaging done in Chapel Hill revealed the fracture," the statement reads.
"The evaulation process is ongoing to determine the timteable for Wilson's return. The Atlanta native leads the Tar Heels with 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. He has set UNC freshman records by scoring in double figures in all 24 games to begin his career and with 17 20-point games."
Losing Wilson for any length of time will be a devastating blow for North Carolina. The team will have to rally together and other players will have to step up in his absence.
Hopefully, the Tar Heels will be able to get Wilson back to full healthy by March Madness. If he's fully healthy, North Carolina will at least have a chance to make a run at a National Championship.
Expect to hear more updates about Wilson's status and timeline for return in the near future. For now, all fans can do is await the news anxiously and hope for the best.
Wilson's draft status should not be impacted much if at all by the injury.
