The North Carolina Tar Heels have landed a massive weapon in the transfer portal.

It has certainly been a wild transfer portal for the North Carolina Tar Heels, as they found a new quarterback in Billy Edwards and watched as 2025 signal-caller Gio Lopez departed.

North Carolina has also seen a mass exodus of players leave Chapel Hill, and head coach Bill Belichick is searching for answers.

While the Tar Heels have not really struck gold just yet in the portal, they did just land a very intriguing weapon, earning a commitment from former Colorado State tight end Jaxxon Warren.

What makes Warren unique? Well, he stands 6-foot-8, making him quite the red zone target for Edwards next fall.

Warren only logged seven catches for 95 yards and a touchdown last season, but don't let the lack of production fool you. He only played in two games due to a season-ending injury.

It should also be noted that Warren — who was the top-ranked tight end in the transfer portal — redshirted in 2024 due to surgery on both shoulders. He also played at Navarro Junior College in 2023, when he posted 17 catches for 308 yards and a couple of scores.

This is definitely an interesting pickup for UNC considering how much its offense struggled in 2025. Of course, that had a lot to do with the quarterback position, and it remains to be seen if Edwards is actually an upgrade over Lopez.

Edwards spent last season at Wisconsin but only threw 16 passes. He played for Maryland the prior three campaigns, with his highlight year coming in 2024 when he threw for 2,881 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 65 percent of his passes.

Belichick went just 4-8 in his inaugural year at North Carolina, a season that featured numerous embarrassing blowout losses.

The Tar Heels had not failed to qualify for a bowl game since 2018 prior to Belichick's arrival, so 2025 was definitely not his finest moment.

On the bright side, Belichick has put together a top-20 recruiting class for North Carolina heading into 2026, so perhaps things are beginning to turn around in Chapel Hill.

That being said, the UNC's current roster is rather light when it comes to top-tier talent, so it stands to reason that the Tar Heels may struggle again next fall.
