ESPN's Pete Thamel shared a bold message about Steve Belichick resigning from the team.
North Carolina Tar Heels defensive coordinator Steve Belichick officially resigned from his position with the team.
Following his decision, ESPN College Football Insider Pete Thamel delivered a strong message about Belichick resigning during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.
"The Steve Belichick resignation isn't a surprise," Thamel said. "He hasn't been with the team since early August."
Since Steve has been away from the team, his brother, Brian Belichick, has been calling defensive plays, and he will likely continue to do so in the 2026 season. He is the secondary coach but is handling greater responsibilities, including play-calling duties.
Head coach Bill Belichick has gotten off to a strong start to the year, with the Tar Heels 2-0.
IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectNorth Carolina came away with a 15-10 win over TCU before a dominant victory in Week 2 against East Tennessee State, 35-3. While there have been a lot of off-the-field storylines surrounding the resignations of their defensive coordinator and general manager, it hasn't affected on-field performance.
In Week 2, the offense started to click as quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. completed 15 of 20 passes for 244 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
He hit different weapons as Jelani Thurman had four receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown, C.J. Sadler had three receptions for 66 yards, and Benjamin Hall had two receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Demon June was great at finding the end zone to finish off drives, as he had 33 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries.
On the defensive side of the ball, the pass rush played at a high level, with Xavier Lewis and Jaylen Harvey each recording two sacks. North Carolina's defense has allowed only 13 points through the first two weeks of the season, proving they can be an elite unit.
Bill Belichick's team is having quite a turnaround after struggling in the 2025 season. If the Tar Heels can come away with a win in Week 3 over the Clemson Tigers, they will prove they can be in the mix to win the ACC Title this season.
