Bill Belichick didn't get off to a hot start at North Carolina.
The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach of the New England Patriots inherited a mess of a roster after Mack Brown parted ways after the 2024 season.
Based on his success in the NFL, many college football fans thought Belichick could immediately make the Tar Heels relevant in the ACC.
Instead, reality set in on Sept. 1 when TCU beat the snot out of UNC 48-14 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina would win its next two games against Charlotte and Richmond, but would lose its next four games against Power 4 programs.
Amid drama surrounding assistants and players leaving the team early, UNC did make progress by earning wins against lowly ACC competitors Syracuse and Stanford.
However, North Carolina lost its final three games, including a 32-25 contest to rival Duke and a 42-19 laugher to rival NC State.
Belichick is hoping his recruiting efforts this season will make the 4-8 record in 2025 an aberration.
During his show on Sunday, Josh Pate suggested Belichick could be on the hot seat in 2026.
"And then Bill Belichick at North Carolina, I don't really know what to make of that either," Pate said. "Only because they were bad last year. Schedule gets tougher this year.
"You got to figure the roster will look a whole lot more like they want it to look. But also, I don't know, how bad does it have to be? How bad does it have to be at North Carolina? We're not talking about Texas. We're not talking about USC."
Pate thinks Belichick's status in Chapel Hill is a "wild card" this offseason.
Still, if the program was willing to part with a legendary coach like Brown, North Carolina has to put some pressure on Belichick given the commitment they made to bring in the future Hall of Fame head coach.
College football is much different than the NFL. Belichick needed some time for a learning curve, but progress must be made in Year 2.
After missing out on becoming a first-ballot HOF in the NFL, Belichick might feel more pressure himself to have a successful season with UNC.
