North Carolina's decision to move on from Dylan Mingo didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense when it happened. Mingo, the top-rated point guard in the country by most services, and a top-five overall player in the 2026 high school class, seemed to be a perfect player for a UNC roster that is going to deal with multiple losses.
With new head coach Michael Malone here, having a five-star point guard who can make plays at the level Mingo can seems to be something that should intrigue him.
However, we now have multiple reports stating why Mingo and Malone decided to go their separate ways.
“Dylan Mingo will no longer be a Tar Heel. Following a return visit to North Carolina, new head coach Michael Malone has decided to part ways with the five-star point guard, according to a source close to the program. Multiple sources confirmed to Inside Carolina that Mingo took the second official visit to Chapel Hill that began on Friday. An NCAA rule allows recruits and signees to take a second official visit to a school following a coaching change,” Spencer Haskell of On3 wrote.
From the sound of things, Mingo and his family don't believe that North Carolina is the right spot for him right now. Whether that means that North Carolina doesn't want to give him as much NIL money as it once said it was going to, his role is going to be a lot smaller than it would have been had Davis still been there, or anything else, there seem to have been some issues with that conversation.
“North Carolina parted ways with five-star combo guard Dylan Mingo on Monday night. Mingo, the No. 8 overall recruit in the 2025 class, was the second-highest-rated guard to commit to the Tar Heels in the modern recruiting era (since 2000) and was viewed as a major recruiting win for former head coach Hubert Davis when he committed on Feb. 17. However, conversations between new UNC head coach Michael Malone and the Mingo family reportedly deteriorated this weekend, leading the Tar Heels to part ways with the Glen Head (N.Y.) Long Island Lutheran product,” Grant Hughes of 247 Sports wrote.
This could also be because Mingo wants to play with his brother, Kayden Mingo, who is currently in the transfer portal from Penn State.
