Statistical data reveals the Tar Heels suffered a historic collapse against the Orange.
The last thing North Carolina Tar Heels fans want to hear is a statistic that makes their Week 8 loss against Syracuse look even worse, but ESPN's Bill Connelly really put things into perspective.
Connelly's SP+ spreadsheet revealed that the Orange had the fifth lowest postgame win expectancy in the entire FBS across Week 8.
Syracuse's win over UNC came with a 33% clip, with only the following four upsets having a lower percentage:
- Kansas over Baylor (29.3%)
- West Virginia over TCU (28.6%)
- Army over Tulsa (24.8%)
- FAU over Rice (15.2%)
For reference, this isn't just because of how poor Syracuse was coming into this game. Florida Atlantic took on a 1-6 Rice squad, but their postgame win expectancy was so low due to how that game played out.
When looking at how things went down at Kenan Stadium, these percentages become much more clear.
Other notable games with a slightly higher percentage than Syracuse's win at UNC are below:
- Virginia Tech over Clemson (38.1%)
- Minnesota over Iowa (42.2%)
- Stanford over NC State (43.3%)
Overtime loss is a tough pill to swallow
Dropping a must-win game against Syracuse was never on UNC's bingo card, but that's why the saying "any given Saturday" exists.
With a showdown against top-ranked Miami looming, this absolutely crushes the Tar Heels confidence going into what could've been a statement victory for UNC.
That's not to say they can't go out and take down the Hurricanes on Halloween, but at this point, it feels like they'll need a miracle.
The Tar Heels are once again just one game over .500, and while they have a relatively favorable schedule after the Miami game, that doesn't excuse them dropping a pair of winnable games this year to Clemson and Syracuse.
UNC, with a win over Miami, would've been in the drivers seat for a shot at the ACC Championship. Now, they're just 2-2 in conference play and could very easily fall below .500 if Miami does to UNC what they've done to everyone else this season.
There are so many little mistakes that added up in the Syracuse game, and while UNC protected the ball, they lost the time of possession battle and allowed far too many fourth down conversions.
Syracuse had this defense on the ropes and decided to risk it all with the two-point conversion call in overtime.
The Orange had nothing to lose, and if UNC wants a shot at beating Miami on Saturday, Oct. 31, they're going to need to play with that same mindset.
