The North Carolina Tar Heels have landed a wide receiver in the transfer portal after bagging quarterback Billy Edwards.

The North Carolina Tar Heels may have landed their new quarterback on Sunday, as they secured former Wisconsin Badgers signal-caller Billy Edwards in the transfer portal.

Shortly after, North Carolina proceeded to bag former UL-Monroe wide receiver Jonathan Bibbs, filling a major need after a mass exodos of receivers this offseason.

Bibbs spent the first two years of his career at UL-Monroe, logging one 65-yard touchdown catch during his freshman campaign and then following that up with 26 catches for 383 yards and three scores this past year after redshirting.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound weapon is a former three-star recruit who could very well serve as the Tar Heels' No. 2 receiver behind Jordan Shipp next season.

North Carolina's offense was a significant problem during Bill Belichick's debut campaign at Chapel Hill. Gio Lopez was a considerable disappointment at quarterback, and outside of Shipp and some flashes from running back Demon June, UNC simply did not have enough weapons.

It's going to be difficult for the Tar Heels to land all of the playmakers they need here in the portal, especially given that their shaky situation under center does not exactly make them an attractive destination for top wide receivers. But landing Bibbs is a start.

Belichick has also put together a top-20 recruiting class heading into 2026, so improvement is expected from a North Carolina squad that went just 4-8 with a handful of embarrassing blowout losses on its resume this past season.

Of course, the Tar Heels have never been known for their football program, so Belichick — who won six Super Bowls as an NFL head coach — is certainly facing an uphill battle.

That being said, 2025 marked the first time that UNC did not qualify for a bowl game since 2018, so it's very easy to view Belichick's inaugural season as a failure.

Regardless, there is still plenty of time for the 73-year-old to turn things around, and at the very least, North Carolina seems to be acting pretty aggressively in the transfer portal this winter.

We'll if the Tar Heels make any other significant additions in the coming days and weeks.
