UNC Tar Heels Achieve Frightening History After Opening ACC Win cover image

The North Carolina Tar Heels made history with their first win of ACC conference play.

The North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Florida State Seminoles by a score of 79-66 on Dec. 30, representing North Carolina's first win in ACC conference play this season.

It should also be the first of many.

The Tar Heels improved to 13-1 with the victory, with their lone loss coming against Michigan State on Thanksgiving.

But North Carolina has also achieved some history in this recent run, and Grant Chacere of Tar Heels Wire broke it down.

"Florida State became the 14th straight opponent to fail to reach 75 points against UNC, the program’s longest such streak to open a season since 1981-82," Chacere wrote. "That team went all 34 games without allowing 75 points and finished with a national championship."

And you know who was on that Tar Heels squad? None other than Michael Jordan.

Of course, there is no MJ here in 2026, but there is no question that this North Carolina squad is loaded with talent and could very well be the best team Hubert Davis has had since taking over as head coach in 2021.

It's not like UNC has been beating nobodies, either, as the Tar Heels lay claim to victories over Kansas and Kentucky this season, as well as a win against Ohio State.

The frontcourt of Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar may very well be the best in the country, and both Seth Trimble and Luka Bogavac are explosive backcourt scorers.

While it's too early to plan a parade at Chapel Hill, North Carolina's suffocating defense is leading a very scary unit that only seems to be improving as the year progresses.

“Defensively, we have the ability to switch, where they can guard guards out on the perimeter," Davis said. "Their length is real. I think somebody asked me a question earlier today in regards to our field goal percentage defense. And, I referenced that when I played, like the number one thing that I struggled the most is going up with guys with length. And we have length."

The Tar Heels lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as an 11-seed last year, but it seems relatively safe to say that they are considerably more equipped to make a deep March Madness run this time around.

North Carolina will face SMU on Saturday afternoon.
