This North Carolina Tar Heels star has revealed why he decided to stay at Chapel Hill.

Bill Belichick's debut as North Carolina Tar Heels head coach did not exactly go according to plan, as North Carolina went just 4-8 in 2025 and suffered a handful of blowout losses along the way.

However, while just about everything went bad for the Tar Heels last season, there actually were some bright spots. They were limited, but they were there.

One of them was the play of defensive end Melkart Abou-Jaoude, who racked up 47 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks to quietly establish himself as one of the better pass rushers in the country.

As a result of his breakout campaign, there was some speculation that Abou-Jaoude could potentially bolt Chapel Hill for the transfer portal, but the Lebanese native opted to return to UNC for another season.

Why did Abou-Jaoude decide to spurn the portal in order to stay at North Carolina? He explained recently while speaking to reporters.

"I've got a lot of love for UNC," Abou-Jaoude said. "The opportunity they gave me last year, I've got a lot of love for my teammates, and I just wanted to come back this year and help the program get to where it needs to be."

Abou-Jaoude actually spent three years at Delaware between 2022 and 2024 before transferring to North Carolina. He showed promise during his latter days with his former school, but definitely broke out with the Tar Heels in 2025.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defender has also put himself on the map as a potential prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft thanks to a dominant display during the second half of this past season.

Abou-Jaoude was particularly impressive between Weeks 7 and 9 in particular, posting three straight double-digit sack performances and racking up seven sacks in total between those three games.

It will be interesting to see how much his draft stock rises if he puts together another strong showing in 2026.

For now, though, Abou-Jaoude is merely focused on helping North Carolina rebound and put forth a better effort next season.

It should be noted that the 2025 campaign marked the first time the Tar Heels failed to qualify for a bowl game since 2018.
