UNC fans can now secure travel packages for the Tar Heels’ Jan. 30 neutral-site showdown with Illinois in Nashville, a matchup that could become one of the biggest games on Carolina’s 2026-27 schedule.
North Carolina fans looking to make the trip to Music City for one of the marquee games on the Tar Heels’ 2026-27 schedule can officially start making plans.
UNC announced Wednesday that travel packages are now on sale for the 2027 Nashville Hoops Showdown, which will pit Michael Malone’s Tar Heels against Illinois on Saturday, January 30, at Bridgestone Arena, in a re-match of the 2005 national championship.
The available packages include a ticket in the North Carolina fan block, hotel accommodations at the JW Marriott Nashville and an exclusive hospitality experience inside Bridgestone Arena on game day. Individual game tickets are scheduled to go on sale October 15.
For Tar Heel fans, Nashville itself makes for a compelling road-trip destination. But the basketball should provide an even bigger reason to circle the date.
Illinois projects to be one of the premier teams in the Big Ten and potentially one of the best teams in the country. CBS Sports placed the Fighting Illini atop its early Big Ten rankings and in its national-title-contender tier after Brad Underwood’s program went 28-9, finished 15-5 in conference play and advanced to the Final Four last season.
Illinois brings back a talented core that includes Andrej Stojakovic, David Mirkovic, the Ivisic brothers (Tomislav and Zvonimir) and Jake Davis, while also adding Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks and five-star freshman Quentin Coleman. That combination of experience, size and shooting gives the Illini a roster capable of once again competing at the top of the Big Ten.
That makes this much more than a fun neutral-site trip for North Carolina.
By late January, both teams should be well established and deep into conference play. For the Tar Heels, a matchup of this caliber away from Chapel Hill could provide a major opportunity to strengthen an NCAA Tournament résumé and test themselves against a team with legitimate Final Four aspirations.
The game will also renew a series loaded with history. North Carolina and Illinois have split their eight previous meetings, with each program winning four. This will be their first matchup since 2010. Most famously, the Tar Heels defeated Illinois in the 2005 national championship game to capture the program’s fourth NCAA title.
It will also mark North Carolina’s first game in Nashville since facing Vanderbilt on the road in 1987 and its first game anywhere in Tennessee since 2018.
UNC’s 2026-27 non-conference schedule already offers Michael Malone’s first team several significant tests, but a late-January neutral-site matchup against a projected Big Ten heavyweight stands out.
And now Tar Heel fans who want to be there for it can officially start booking the trip.
