North Carolina made a very interesting decision when it decided to move on from head coach Hubert Davis.
I'm still unsure whether that was the right or wrong decision, but with how much North Carolina is spending on its basketball program, we all know that it was a possibility sooner rather than later.
Unfortunately, Davis wasn't doing enough to keep his job, and North Carolina decided to go in a direction many fans wanted.
Only time will tell whether the Tar Heels made the right decision in hiring Michael Malone, but I'm excited to see what the future of this program looks like.
Regardless, it doesn't sound like there were any hard feelings about the departure, as North Carolina's athletic director recently explained why it went this way. He said it had nothing to do with Davis being in the wrong or doing anything, but rather because the Tar Heels wanted to make a change to bring in a new face.
"The most difficult thing that an athletic director or a president of a sports team has to do is when you feel like you need to make a change," AD Steve Newmark said, per 247 Sports. "Sometimes, you have to make a change because the person isn't the right fit, but often you make a change just because things had probably gotten to the point where bringing in some new blood would help energize and re-invigorate the program.
"And it has really nothing to do with the person having done anything wrong. It was tough, and we agonized over it. And Hubert [Davis] is as good a person as you're going to meet. He cares for his players as much as anybody that I've ever seen in those types of positions. He put his blood, sweat, and tears into this program."
This is the typical response from an athletic director in this age of college sports. If coaches don't produce from day one, changes will be made. When we factor in NIL scenarios and how much schools are spending, the pressure is higher than ever, which actually sounds crazy when we already consider how much pressure there really is at North Carolina.
Regardless, the Tar Heels went in that direction, and they'll have to hope it was the right one.
