I have my fair share of questions about what North Carolina's football program will look like this season, and I think that's only fair for everybody who follows the team.
North Carolina had one of the worst seasons imaginable under Bill Belichick in his first season, and unfortunately, it doesn't really look like that's going to change. He didn't hit the portal hard enough, decided to recruit a bunch of high school kids, and perhaps the biggest problem is the simple fact that the program does not have a quarterback who I really have much trust in.
That was the issue a season ago with Gio Lopez, and it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon. In fact, one writer still believes North Carolina's quarterback position is the biggest problem it has to answer, and I don't think anybody can disagree with that.
“North Carolina’s biggest weakness last year was the quarterback position, and it will remain so this season.
“The position is expected to be led by Billy Edwards, who is recovering from a season-ending injury sustained early in the year—marking the second consecutive season he has faced this setback. Aside from him, the only quarterbacks on the roster with any game experience are Miles O’Neill and Au’Tori Newkirk, though their playing time has been limited entirely to garbage time,” Grant Chachere wrote.
I don't even know if it's worth talking about who the quarterback is going to be at the moment, considering Belichick has yet to come out and announce a guaranteed starter.
The next few weeks are expected to give us an answer, though I also don't think it's unfair to suggest that we could see multiple quarterbacks play this year if things don't go as planned.
This is a problem that North Carolina will have to figure out in both the short and long term, which is why I'm not very optimistic about how next season will look.
I don't get the idea of not bringing in an elite college quarterback, but there could also be some issues with guys wanting to play for the Tar Heels now.
