UNC head coach Bill Belichick trades Super Bowl rings for rapid development, revealing why the classroom environment of Chapel Hill offers a teaching satisfaction he never found in the pros.
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick had a steep learning curve in 2025.
Despite his coaching career beginning in 1975 with the Baltimore Colts, Belichick had never coached at the college level in any capacity. He fell behind in recruiting in Year 1 and paid for it by finishing with a 4-8 record.
The six-time Super Bowl champion head coach was a guest on Barstool's "Pardon My Take" podcast published on Monday. Belichick said he has a better opportunity to teach the fundamentals to players in college than the pros.
"I try to do whatever I can to help improve the players and the team," Belichick said. "So whatever that consists of, if it's giving 'em coaching points on the field, off the field, watching film, talking about fundamentals. However I can help them reach their goals, play better and help our team reach its goals.
"That's what I do. It's, it's fun. It's a lot more opportunity to coach really at this level than, than in the NFL. And, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it and coaching all the groups in practice... I can go yell at anybody."
Belichick noticed that college players improve quite a bit and fast compared to NFL athletes.
"They improve a lot," Belichick said. "They improve very fast and, and really in a very short amount of time, sometimes, you know, three to six to nine months, it's, it's almost like watching a different player.
"So that's very gratifying to see that type of improvement. They don't improve that fast in the NFL. They improve, but not at that rate. And so, if the kid is open-minded, willing to listen and then we will really work at the skills that he needs to work on."
UNC needs Belichick and his staff to work his magic this offseason. The Tar Heels have better players on the roster, but it's unclear if they are good enough to seriously contend for the ACC or will be happy settling for a bowl game.
One would assume Belichick recruited players that were more willing to put in the work to improve, and that could be key to a much better season this fall.
