The legendary coach knows what this could be.
With North Carolina taking on a Miami team that's the consensus No. 1 squad in America right now, it has to feel like an uphill battle this week. Miami enters this game with some very impressive wins throughout the year, including a win against a ranked Wake Forest squad, beating Florida State, taking down Pittsburgh, Clemson, and some other impressive programs.
However, one could make an argument that the next couple of weeks for Miami are going to be the true test of what it's going to be this year. Not that North Carolina is some great program at the moment, but it's playing decent football. Miami will also take on Notre Dame, Duke, and Virginia Tech after playing the Tar Heels.
As for how North Carolina feels entering this game, it doesn't feel like anybody is saying it doesn't have a chance.
Many believe Miami is the better team here, and it's tough to disagree, but others also think this could be a trap game for the Hurricanes.
As for what Bill Belichick believes, he understands that Miami is just as good as any team in college football at the moment, even going as far as saying that they're the best team in the country ranking-wise and they have every right to be.
"Miami, they're the No. 1 team in the country, and they should be," Belichick said, per the Miami Herald. "Really impressive. Mario has done, as usual, a great job down there. They're a very well-balanced team, pretty much do everything well. Good in the kicking game. The return game is dangerous. Offensively, they can run it. They can throw it. The quarterback's good. The receivers are good. Offensive line's really good. They work well together. Very well coached. A lot of explosive plays, but they can grind it out, too.
"They just do a really good job defensively. Good pass rush. Put a lot of pressure on the offense. There are several good players that we ought to be conscious of who are game-wreckers. They're the product of the linebackers. It's a solid team all the way through. They have good players who are well coached. They look like the No. 1 team in the country to me. Good opportunity for us. Good challenge for us. Looking forward to playing our best game. Look forward to the challenge. Excited to see them come to town. They played pretty well on the road, too. They play well everywhere."
It's tough to disagree with what Belichick is saying here when we look at what Miami has done on both sides of the football.
Offensively, this has been the best team in the country all year. Miami can put up 40-plus points in its sleep, though there have been some problems defensively over the past two weeks. Allowing 35 points to Florida State was far from ideal, and Pittsburgh wasn't terrible in a 52-23 loss to the Hurricanes.
I'm curious to see if North Carolina has enough offensively to keep up with a roster like this, though it'll give us another chance to see just how far away it might be.
