The top-ranked Hurricanes head to Chapel Hill with dominant momentum, leaving a struggling Tar Heels squad desperate for a Halloween miracle.
When the AP Top 25 dropped on Sunday, Oct. 25, only one of the 25 teams didn't move in the rankings.
The team that didn't move? No. 1 Miami.
The Hurricanes went from No. 3 to No. 1 in Week 7, and then after a wild Week 8, they were the only team in the nation to maintain their position.
Obviously, North Carolina isn't ranked, and it's not like they received any votes either.
In total, there were nine unranked teams who received votes, and the only way the Tar Heels could've joined that list is if they took care of business against Syracuse.
Somehow, that didn't happen. UNC dropped a heartbreaking overtime game to an ACC opponent that previously hadn't won a conference game all year.
Now, things are set to kick into high gear as the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes come to town for a primetime showdown on Halloween.
Miami had 59 first-place votes
Ohio State was able to enjoy the week off, but No. 2 BYU suffered a massive loss at UCF, which pushed the Cougars all the way down to No. 8.
That allowed OSU to rise to No. 2, and they received 10 first-place votes compared to the 59 that Miami received.
According to the latest poll, No. 6 Utah also received a first-place vote. That seems a bit out of place, but they did just rise from No. 10 to No. 6 and are a perfect 7-0 this season.
Speaking of 7-0, that's Miami's record after they crushed a formerly ranked Pittsburgh team, 52-23.
Pittsburgh is indeed a common opponent between Miami and UNC, but so was Clemson, and the Hurricanes crushed the Tigers, 41-13.
Miami is the No. 1 ranked team for a reason. UNC couldn't have asked for a worse time to come into this game with no momentum whatsoever.
Second-year head coach Bill Belichick knows just how important this game is, especially since it's another home showdown.
This fanbase is starting to lose hope, and in all honesty, they should after dropping a game to Syracuse.
There's absolutely a world where they at least compete against Miami as they did in the first parts of that Notre Dame game, but winning feels like a long shot, and even that's an understatement.
Thankfully for the Tar Heels, this schedule gets much easier down the stretch, though will the damage already be done at that point? Only time will tell.
