Following a frustrating loss to Notre Dame, the Tar Heels face a brutal conference schedule. Now, a high-stakes trip to Pittsburgh will define Belichick’s polarizing coaching tenure.
Saying Bill Belichick is in the hot seat isn't some hot take, but those comments are going to once again come to life after a 37-26 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame.
There's truly no shame in losing to this Fighting Irish squad, though some would argue this felt like another winnable game that slipped away in the Belichick era.
This loss isn't nearly as bad as the Clemson one from two weeks prior, but it is worth noting that UNC had basically two full weeks to figure out their problems after falling to 2-1.
Now, they're 2-2 (0-1) with another conference battle looming next weekend at Pittsburgh.
Belichick's job is still safe
Firing Belichick after losing to the No. 3-ranked team in the nation would be incredibly silly, and honestly irresponsible.
There's a case to be made that he could be out of a job by the end of the year, but pulling the plug on his rollercoaster tenure at UNC after this Notre Dame game simply isn't it.
No team wants to be 2-2 through their first four games, especially when they were in both of these games late, but that's where this program is at, and that's something they have to work through.
There's no need to change quarterbacks
One of the biggest takeaways from the Notre Dame game is yes, Billy Edwards Jr. threw two interceptions, but he also kept UNC's offense alive with his three touchdowns.
UNC wasn't able to run the ball against the Fighting Irish, and there's no telling as to how someone like Miles O'Neill would've fared against Notre Dame.
Edwards Jr. should absolutely still be the starting QB when they head to Acrisure Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 10, but that matchup against Pittsburgh is far scarier than originally anticipated.
Panthers are a perfect 5-0
Pittsburgh is already 2-0 in the ACC, so it's not going to be easy for UNC to secure its first conference win of the year.
The Panthers just beat Virginia Tech on the road due to the Hookies missing a game-winning field goal.
It's crazy to think Pitt has won five straight games, as they ended last season having lost three of their final four.
UNC has three games before they need to worry about No. 4 Miami, but suddenly, both Pittsburgh and Duke are far scarier than before, as those two teams are a combined 9-0 compared to a Tar Heels squad that is far from guaranteed to make a bowl game.
