The North Carolina Tar Heels definitely need an offensive overhaul this offseason, and they already started by hiring Bobby Petrino as their new offensive coordinator.
But they also need to add some offensive talent.
Outside of wide receiver Jordan Shipp, North Carolina was largely bereft of reliable playmakers in 2025, and they also had major issues at the quarterback position.
While Gio Lopez showed progress during the second half of the season, he was underwhelming overall, finishing with just 1,747 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
The general expectation is that Lopez will be back under center for the Tar Heels in 2026, but it's also possible that Bill Belichick could try and land another quarterback via the transfer portal, especially after losing four-star talent Bryce Baker.
North Carolina probably won't be landing D.J. Lagway or any of the genuine top signal-callers in the portal, but there is one name Tar Heels fans should be monitoring closely: Kenny Minchey.
Minchey just completed his redshirt sophomore season at Notre Dame and decided to enter the portal when it became abundantly clear that he wasn't going to be playing ahead of CJ Carr.

Minchey is also a four-star transfer and is ranked eighth among quarterbacks entering the portal, via 247 Sports.
The Hendersonville, Tn. native is a very intriguing dual threat with impressive arm talent and was a highly sought-after prospect in his 2023 recruiting class.
It's clear that Minchey has potential, but he never got the chance to show it in South Bend. North Carolina could bring in Minchey to provide some competition for Lopez in camp, and there stands a solid chance he would be able to beat out Lopez for the starting job.
The Tar Heels plucked Lopez from South Alabama in the transfer portal last year, so they haven't exactly had good luck on the portal front thus far, but perhaps Minchey could change that.
Of course, unless UNC is also able to bag some wide receivers, it isn't exactly an ideal destination for any quarterback searching for a new home, so that is something Belichick and Co. will have to keep in mind if they are, in fact, attempting to land a signal-caller via the portal.
All of that said, Minchey could actually represent a realistic option for North Carolina.
