The Wildcats surge past the Nitanny Lions in the second half.
Against Penn State in their second consecutive road game, the Wildcats inserted a second-half surge into their winning formula.
After stunning top-ranked Maryland on Thursday, No. 4 Northwestern cruised to its fifth straight victory with a 17-12 win over No. 18 Penn State on Sunday, marking coach Kelly Amonte Hiller's career 400th win. Though the 'Cats clashed with the Nittany Lions' early resilience and a late-game rally, their dominance built in the third quarter proved insurmountable.
Madison Taylor capped the afternoon with a six-goal, three-assist masterpiece. Aditi Foster and Noel Cumberland posted two goals apiece, while Maddie Epke scored one goal and garnered 10 draw-control wins.
Despite the favorable matchup, Northwestern faced early trouble as the Nittany Lions struck for two goals in the first five minutes. The 'Cats tied it midway through the first period with consecutive free-position conversions from Cumberland and Taylor.
Penn State continued controlling the tempo and added another goal a minute later. Following Foster's green-card violation, Kelly Mackinney capitalized on the man-up opportunity to retake the lead. But Taylor Lapointe stepped up to tie the score before the second quarter.
The game evolved into a back-and-forth affair. After a dogfight through the first five minutes of the second quarter, Penn State struck first on a man-up play by Erika Ho. But the 'Cats didn't hesitate to fight back. Kate Ratanaproeks surpassed all defenders in a charge and netted another one just 18 seconds later, following Epke's draw-control win.
After Penn State's Anna Salerno gave the Nittany Lions another lead, Taylor stepped up, collecting a pass and cutting in for a close shot to tie the score at 5-5. Four minutes later, the 'Cats maneuvered inside the crease as Lauren Archer converted Lapointe's delivery. Northwestern grasped its first lead of the game.
The 'Cats extended to a two-goal advantage in the final minute of the half. After forcing a turnover on Penn State's end, Taylor scooped up the ground ball and fed Hannah Rudolph to lead the counter with a solo goal. Northwestern carried a 7-5 halftime lead.
Entering the second half, Northwestern dominated Penn State by shutting down the Nittany Lions' offense and piercing them for four goals in seven minutes. Taylor corralled three of them amid the offensive run, while Foster added one as well, extending the lead to 11-5.
Though the Nittany Lions broke the drought through Payton Wainan, Taylor remained red-hot and quickly responded with another convincing play. After McKenzie Brown forced a turnover, Taylor capitalized for a better lead.
Abby LoCascio also stepped up for the 'Cats' six-goal cushion, finishing a Taylor feed with a turnaround jumping shot on the right post. Despite Penn State's Emma Kelly fighting one back, the 'Cats graduate transfer Annabel Child rounded the cushion back to six in the final two minutes before the fourth quarter.
After Lapointe's free-position chance and Taylor's following shot were squandered, Cumberland picked up the slack, striding through stick checks for a powerful finish at 14-8. Northwestern then extended to a game-high seven-goal lead as Foster cut back to the right side and found a better angle. Epke followed with another goal that pushed the gap to eight at 16-8.
The Nittany Lions showcased their resilience in the final frame with three goals, trimming the deficit to 16-11 with about four minutes remaining as the 'Cats got sloppy defensively. Penn State's Delaney Radin added another goal to cut it to 16-12, forcing Northwestern to call a timeout with two minutes left.
But the late effort wasn't enough to create chaos. Taylor closed out the game with a finishing strike to seal the 17-12 victory.
Northwestern will play its penultimate regular-season game against Rutgers at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium on Wednesday, April 16, at 4 p.m. CT.
