Northwestern kept that streak alive Sunday. With a first-round bye providing rest, the top-seeded 'Cats dominated James Madison 17-5 at full strength, shutting down the Dukes' offense while overwhelming them on the other end.
Madison Taylor posted a season-high eight goals with four draw controls won. Aditi Foster followed with four goals, while Noel Cumberland contributed two. Maddie Epke scored one and added four assists while dominating the draw circle with nine wins. Defensively, the 'Cats forced 10 turnovers from the Dukes. Goalie Jennika Cuocco made seven saves.
Northwestern opened strong. Taylor scored a brace for the 'Cats' first two goals to set the tone. Though the Dukes responded through Josie Pell after teammate Ava Main fought for the draw ball against Epke, the 'Cats forced a timeout after Foster finished Epke's delivery for another strike.
Leading the 'Cats' offense all year long, Taylor clicked early as she posted a hat trick in the first quarter, picking up Epke's quick pass behind the crease and slamming it home with space open on the left post.
Following a foul from JMU, Northwestern maintained its advantage at 5-2 after the first quarter when Cumberland converted a free-position opportunity.
James Madison began rallying at the start of the second quarter. Olivia Matthews dodged Cuocco's defense and found space for a sweep through the Northwestern goalie's legs. Though the goal was disallowed, Matthews fought back with another goal from distance.
But the Dukes failed to stop Taylor, who registered her fourth goal in the second quarter via a Northwestern counter. Epke gave the 'Cats a five-goal lead through a free-position attack.
Before halftime, Taylor notched her fifth of the game, and Northwestern dominated 9-3 heading into the break.
The 'Cats completely shut off the Dukes in the second half while opening fire during the third quarter. Following Annabel Child's first goal of the game, Foster blasted two goals alongside Taylor's sixth tally, creating a 10-goal lead for Northwestern during the third period.
Despite JMU breaking the silence, Northwestern retained its double-digit dominance, led by Cumberland and Taylor's relentless attack. With five minutes remaining, the 'Cats showed no mercy. Foster rushed downhill and caught Kate Ratanaproeksa's feed for her fourth. Taylor continued piling on, reaching her seventh goal of the game after drifting away from defenders with a smooth spin for the finish.
Taylor added her eighth in the closing minutes as Northwestern wrapped up the dominant Lake Show performance with a 12-goal advantage.
After advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals, the 'Cats will face the winner between Denver and No. 8 Colorado on Thursday at Martin Stadium.
