The Wildcats dominate early but falter against No. 15 Purdue in the second half.

Senior Night at Welsh-Ryan Arena carried extra meaning for Northwestern. But despite an inspired first half, the Wildcats faltered late as No. 15 Purdue found its form as a ranked team.

Northwestern (13-17, 5-14 B1G) opened with elevated defensive intensity that stifled Purdue's attack and built a nine-point halftime lead. But the Wildcats couldn't sustain their momentum in the second half as the Boilermakers (23-7, 13-6 B1G) caught fire, spoiling Northwestern’s Senior Night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Nick Martinelli fought through all in his final home game with a game-high 28 points. After missing Jake West on Wednesday night, Jayden Reid shouldered the backcourt obligation with 16 points and four assists. Jordan Clayton came off the bench with eight points, including two three-pointers made.

C.J. Cox, who led the Boilermakers' offense with five triples, led the other side with 27 points. Braden Smith struggled with seven points but dished out nine assists. Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 10 and 11 points apiece.

Reid took the first possession personally, opening with a stepback jumper. After showing strong defensive looks early, Tre Singleton knocked down a midrange shot for Northwestern's first lead, but the Boilermakers tied the score on Cox's second-chance bucket. Both teams battled through a low-scoring first four minutes before the timeout, while Northwestern elevated its defensive toughness and created early problems for Purdue.

Cox connected on his second basket off an inbound pass after the timeout. Clayton intercepted a Purdue alley-oop attempt and sparked a transition. Martinelli led the break and found Angelo Ciaravino for a layup. Clayton made an immediate impact with a triple on the next possession, followed by Martinelli's two free throws for a five-point cushion.

The Wildcats remained flawless defensively. After Ciaravino stole Jack Benter's pass, Clayton capitalized with a turnaround jumper from the charity stripe. The Wildcats rode an 11-0 scoring run after Tyler Kropp powered through for a tough drive.

The Boilermakers rejuvenated after a timeout, breaking the drought with eight consecutive points to cut it to five. Arrinten Page responded with a big shot from the top of the key, followed by Reid's driving layup. Northwestern continued frustrating Purdue defensively as Martinelli drew a charging foul from Kaufman-Renn on the weakside.

Purdue stormed back with Loyer's triple. Martinelli dove deep and found Reid wide open for a responsive three-pointer. Reid added another from beyond the arc for a 9-point advantage at 30-21. The senior captain then took over the final minute with four straight points, giving Northwestern a 34-25 halftime lead.

Reid opened the second half with two free throws. After Cox's stepback three, Martinelli powered inside and beat his defender for a floater. Purdue rallied with another Cox triple to cut it to four. Facing danger, Martinelli launched a quick five-point burst to keep Northwestern safe. Loyer knocked down another Purdue three-pointer at the 15:32 mark before timeout.

The Boilermakers fought back with four consecutive points from Kaufman-Renn and Oscar Cluff. On the ensuing possession, Purdue grabbed two straight offensive rebounds and capped the sequence with Cox's layup, tying the game at 43-43.

The Wildcats struck back. Reid converted a left corner three after crisp ball movement while Northwestern held Purdue scoreless on two straight possessions that ended in turnovers. Martinelli cut from the baseline and finished a dunk for a four-point lead.

Smith and Martinelli then traded solo buckets with 10 minutes remaining. Cluff powered in for a strong bucket off a paint mismatch to make it a two-point game at 7:49.

Cox drew Martinelli's third foul on a fastbreak and hit both free throws. After Singleton missed one free throw, the Boilermakers seized their first lead on a transition bucket before Northwestern reclaimed the advantage on Reid's tough drive. Purdue spaced the floor and found Cox for a corner three and a two-point lead.

Martinelli battled through contact for a foul and tied the score with two free throws. But the Wildcats couldn't stop the red-hot Cox, who fired off five straight points to put Purdue up three. Northwestern ignited with four consecutive points, and Page capped off a Purdue turnover with a transition dunk for a one-point lead.

In the clutch, the Boilermakers grabbed a three-point edge after Smith drew a three-point shooting foul and drained all three free throws. On the edge of a shot-clock violation, Clayton stepped up and contorted his body for a contested three-pointer in an awkward position, letting the ball fly home to tie the game.

With one minute remaining, Cox pistolled his fifth triple with space to reclaim the lead. Northwestern wasted the possession on Martinelli's errant pass turnover. Though the Wildcats made a key defensive stop on Purdue's ensuing possession, they cost themselves again with another devastating turnover when Singleton's pass sailed out of reach. Northwestern intentionally fouled Smith with 12 seconds remaining, and he sank both free throws to eliminate all the Wildcats' hope on the Welsh-Ryan's floor.

Northwestern will wrap up its regular season at Minnesota on March 7.
