Atlanta Braves Acquire Former Northwestern Pitcher in Trade

Former Northwestern pitcher Tyler Uberstine is getting a fresh opportunity in a new organization.

The Atlanta Braves acquired Uberstine from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Eli White before optioning the former Wildcat to Triple-A Gwinnett, giving him a fresh opportunity within one of baseball's most successful organizations. 

While the move doesn't place Uberstine on Atlanta's major league roster just yet, it gives the former Wildcat another chance to continue his development with an organization known for producing successful pitchers.

For Uberstine, the trade marks another important step in a professional career that has steadily progressed since leaving Northwestern.

Before beginning his professional career, Uberstine became one of Northwestern's most dependable pitchers.

During his time in Evanston, he established himself as a reliable starter, showcasing the command, durability and strikeout ability that eventually caught the attention of Major League Baseball scouts.

His performance led to the Boston Red Sox selecting him in the 19th round of the 2021 MLB Draft with the 556th overall pick.

Since entering professional baseball, Uberstine has consistently climbed through the Red Sox farm system.

After making his professional debut in the Florida Complex League in 2021, he posted a 1.17 ERA over five appearances before taking on a larger role in 2022. Across 21 games that season, including 15 starts, Uberstine finished with a 5-5 record, a 3.83 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 91 2/3 innings.

Following an injury-shortened 2024 campaign, Uberstine bounced back in a big way during the 2025 season.

Pitching across two levels of Boston's minor league system, he recorded a 6-5 record with a 3.58 ERA over 25 appearances, including 21 starts. He threw 120 2/3 innings while striking out 137 batters, further establishing himself as one of the organization's more reliable starting pitching prospects.

That momentum continued into the 2026 season. 

Before being traded, he appeared in 19 games between Double-A and Triple-A, posting a 3.23 ERA across 39 innings while recording 48 strikeouts and limiting opponents to a .209 batting average. Across his professional minor league career, Uberstine owns a 12-13 record with a 3.52 ERA, 300 strikeouts in 263 2/3 innings and an impressive 1.22 WHIP.

His consistent production earned him his first opportunity in the major leagues earlier this season.

Uberstine made his MLB debut with the Red Sox, pitching 2 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run and striking out two hitters, finishing his brief stint with a 3.38 ERA.

Although he has appeared in just one major league game, reaching the MLB marked another milestone in a career built on steady development. 

Now, the 27-year-old begins a new chapter with the Braves.

Atlanta has consistently developed quality pitching throughout its organization, and the move could provide Uberstine with another pathway back to the major leagues.

While he'll begin in Triple-A Gwinnett, every outing will be another opportunity to impress the Braves' coaching staff and prove he deserves another call-up.

As the Braves continue pushing for a postseason berth, organizational pitching depth becomes increasingly valuable. A strong stretch in Triple-A could put Uberstine back on the major league radar later this season if Atlanta needs reinforcements. 

For Northwestern, Uberstine's move is another reminder of the program's ability to develop professional talent.

From becoming one of the Wildcats' most dependable arms to reaching the major leagues and now joining one of baseball's most successful organizations, Uberstine continues taking meaningful steps in his professional career.

Now, Uberstine will look to take advantage of a fresh start with Atlanta, continue building on his strong minor league resume and earn another opportunity to prove himself at the major league level.
