College Football is Buzzing About Northwestern's Chip Kelly Hire cover image

The Wildcats are bringing in a National Championship-winning play-caller to run their offense.

It's a new day in Evanston. The era of slow, methodical and vanilla offensive play is all but gone, as new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will seek to bring thrilling, highlight-reel action to Northwestern's scoring attack.

Kelly was officially announced as the Wildcats' new OC early on Tuesday morning. Here's what Kelly, head coach David Braun, Athletic Director Mark Jackson and others surrounding the college football world had to say about the hire:

Chip Kelly, New Offensive Coordinator

"I am honored to join the Northwestern Football program. This program and university are clearly on the rise, and the values of the people and this place align with my own. I am grateful for the opportunity. There is tremendous potential under Coach Braun's leadership, and I'm ready to contribute to this team. There is great momentum around the program, and the opening of the new Ryan Field reflects Northwestern's commitment to excellence and innovation. It will be a major asset as we continue to move forward, and I am excited to get to Evanston."

David Braun, Northwestern Head Coach

"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Chip and his wife, Jill, to our university. His innovative approach to offense using systems that focus on varying tempo, efficiency and smart decision-making, his track record of developing quarterbacks, and his ability to maximize talent are exactly what our program needs at this moment. I am extremely grateful for the ongoing partnership of our university, Mark Jackson and passionate supporters to make this addition happen. Make no mistake: this is a program-defining change and is reflective of our long-term commitment to the pursuit of championships."

Mark Jackson, Northwestern Athletic Director

"This is a seminal moment for our program under David Braun's direction and another indication that we are prepared to pursue the highest standard of excellence in all that we do. Our student-athletes perform at an exceptional level academically and competitively, and we proudly maintain one of the strongest retention rates in the country, due in large part to Coach Braun's leadership and the culture he has established. We are excited to welcome Chip into the Northwestern family as we prepare to compete at the new Ryan Field, a college football stadium unlike any other ever built, underscoring our commitment to sustained success on and off the field."

Joseph Himon II, Northwestern Running Back

"its about to get real scary"

Pete Thamel, ESPN Reporter

"The school viewed Kelly, per sources, as someone who could adjust to different personnel and help maximize an offense that ranked No. 96 in the country in both total offense and scoring offense."

Adam Rittenberg, ESPN Reporter

"For at least a week, Kelly has been the target of Northwestern’s plan to revamp its offense, and will be coming to Evanston. Massive move for David Braun and NU."

"Official announcement from Northwestern. After a decade plus of mostly rough-looking offense, a significant pivot with this hire."

David Ubben, The Athletic Writer

"Kelly is one of the sport’s most accomplished coaches, but when he isn’t working at a talent advantage, his results have been average. He won’t have a talent advantage at Northwestern."

"Kelly is still a name that resonates in college football and will build some buzz in Evanston, but he has to prove he can build a strong offense with a roster in the bottom half of the Big Ten."

Matthew Shelton, Wildcat Report Writer

"Braun has consistently talked about a Big Ten championship winning/CFP qualifying standard. This hire is in line with that. If Kelly is motivated and Braun/McGarigle continue their trajectory on defense, I think they have the highest ceiling of an NU staff in the 21st century."

Roger Sherman, Sports! Writer

"dude Northwestern has not had a top 50 offense since I was in college. I'm 35 now. they are going to need to slowly ease me into Chip Kelly. I will be ecstatic with the 79th best offense in the country next year"

Zach Koons, Host of Bleav in Northwestern Podcast

"Honestly, I wasn’t sold on moving on from Zach Lujan because I was skeptical of being able to improve with the next hire. History hasn’t shown Northwestern can attract someone like Chip Kelly. This is a tremendous departure—and a real statement that NU means business."
