After swallowing two consecutive tough defeats, No. 11 Northwestern (6-3, 1-1 B1G) bounced back with a triumphant 17-3 victory over Oregon (6-4, 0-2 B1G) in Eugene on Saturday, collecting its first Big Ten win of the season.
Madison Taylor dominated with 10 points, scoring seven goals and three assists. Olivia Adamson posted her season-high three assists, while Abby LoCascio and Taylor Lapointe shared two goals apiece. Madison Smith stood out with a game-high 10 draw controls.
On the defensive end, the 'Cats' transfer goalie Jennika Cuocco collected four saves. Backup goaltender Francesca Argentieri also saw 6:30 minutes of action, contributing two saves.
Northwestern controlled the statistical battle, outnumbering Oregon in ground balls (21-11) and draw controls (18-6). The 'Cats also unleashed 32 shots, with 20 on target.
The 'Cats battled with the Ducks scoreless through the first 10 minutes until Taylor broke the drought with a free-position opener. Following that momentum, Northwestern cruised with four more goals to close the first period while holding Oregon scoreless.
Though Oregon's Lyla Hurley gave her team its first point on a man-up play early in the second quarter, the 'Cats brutally responded with five unanswered goals. Behind Taylor's dominance, Aditi Foster, Lapointe and Hannah Rudolph also joined the scoring barrage. Northwestern carried a commanding 10-1 lead into halftime.
The rest of the game saw Northwestern maintain control until the final whistle, tacking on seven more goals over the final two frames while Oregon waved the white flag. The Ducks managed just two second-half goals as the 'Cats cruised to the statement road victory.
The routing win also witnessed Taylor reaching career milestones. She became the No. 2 goalscorer in program history, surpassing Selena Lasota's career tally of 287 goals. She also eclipsed Hannah Nielsen's career points figure (398) to jump into No. 2 on NU's all-time points leaderboard. The senior has now scored 290 goals and 407 points in 74 career games, both of which lead all active NCAA players.
The 'Cats encountered early-season hurdles with tough losses to No. 14 Syracuse and No. 25 Ohio State, unveiling warning concerns about Northwestern's struggles controlling pace early and handling late-game pushes from opponents. With well-known aspirations of winning the national championship, Saturday's dominant road performance was much-needed to restore confidence heading into the season's biggest tests.
Northwestern will return to road action in a rematch of the 2025 national title game against No. 1 North Carolina on Wednesday, March 25.
