Mariya Moore brings her basketball IQ to ignite Northwestern women's basketball's future under Carla Berube.
Northwestern women’s basketball added Mariya Moore as a new assistant coach following the program's flip to newly-appointed head coach Carla Berube, the team announced on Wednesday.
Before landing at Evanston, Moore was an assistant coach at Georgetown for three seasons under head coaches Tasha Butts (initially) and, later, Darnell Haney. She was part of the team that cruised to a historic 23-12 record (9-9 Big East) in the 2023-24 season, the program's first 20-win campaign in over a decade. Georgetown then climbed all the way onto the championship game of the conference tournament for the first time in program history, eventually earning a bid to the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT).
Moore’s arrival will bolster Berube’s ability to revamp the team through the transfer portal, and she stood out as a strong pick who played a vital role in recruitment during her time at Georgetown. Four All-Big East Conference selections played under her, including Kelsey Ransom (Defensive Player of the Year in 2024) and Brianna Scott (Sixth Woman of the Year in 2024).
“Mariya is an outstanding recruiter who understands what it takes to succeed in a conference as competitive as the Big Ten,” Berube said. “She aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of Northwestern Women's Basketball, and I'm confident she will make an immediate and lasting impact on our program."

During her two seasons as an assistant coach, Saint Mary's achieved 31 wins and earned six All-West Coast Conference (WCC) honours. After the 2022-23 season, Moore was honoured as one of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Thirty Under 30, an accolade recognising 30 promising women's basketball coaches under 30 across all levels.
Growing up in Richmond, Calif, Moore began her collegiate career at Louisville, earning All-ACC honors in all three seasons she played for the Cardinals. In her sophomore year, Moore received WBCA All-American honorable mention after averaging 14.1 points and 4.4 assists. She transferred to USC for her senior season (2018-19), playing alongside her sister, Minyon. She wrapped up her career by averaging 13.0 points per game for the Trojans and earning Honorable Mention All-Pac 12 honors.
Known as an elite player with a high basketball IQ, the ‘Cats expect Moore to translate her basketball insights into the following recruitment and player development.
