Northwestern falls out of the AP Top 25 after its 34-26 loss to Oregon but remains the first team outside the rankings with 79 votes. The Wildcats will look to bounce back against No. 21 Iowa.

Northwestern is no longer ranked in the AP Top 25 after spending the previous two weeks among the nation's top 25 teams, bringing an end to a short but significant run in the national rankings.

The Wildcats dropped out of Sunday's latest poll following their 34-26 loss to Oregon on Saturday. Northwestern received 79 votes, placing it first among the teams just outside the rankings. The Wildcats had entered the poll at No. 25 two weeks ago, earning their first AP Top 25 ranking under head coach David Braun.

The drop comes after a frustrating loss in which Northwestern appeared to have control of the game before letting its lead slip away. What looked like an opportunity for another statement victory quickly turned into a missed chance to strengthen the Wildcats' position among the nation's ranked teams.

Northwestern built a 20-6 advantage in the first half at Autzen Stadium but struggled to contain Oregon after halftime. The Wildcats couldn't maintain the same level of execution after the break, and Oregon took advantage of several opportunities to complete the comeback.

Northwestern had opportunities to put the game away but couldn't consistently get defensive stops or slow down Oregon's explosive offense. The loss ended the Wildcats' four-game winning streak and dropped them to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play.

While falling out of the rankings is disappointing, the result also gives the Wildcats plenty to evaluate. Northwestern had established itself as a ranked team through a strong stretch of play, but finishing games, limiting mistakes and maintaining consistency will be essential if it wants to return to the national conversation.

The Wildcats won't have to wait long for another opportunity to make a statement. They return home next Saturday to face No. 21 Iowa, which enters the matchup at 6-2 after a dominant 30-0 win over Wisconsin.

It will be a significant test for Northwestern. Iowa brings a ranked opponent into Evanston, giving the Wildcats an immediate opportunity to respond against a quality Big Ten team. The Hawkeyes will also present another challenge for a Northwestern team looking to get its defense back on track and put together a complete performance on both sides of the ball.

The Wildcats still have meaningful opportunities ahead, but they'll need to turn Saturday's disappointment into a stronger performance against Iowa. With the season entering an important stretch, how Northwestern responds could go a long way toward determining whether it can work its way back into the Top 25.

A win over the Hawkeyes would give Northwestern a chance to get back on track, strengthen its resume and make another push toward the national rankings.
