Sophomore Max Green played one season at Northwestern after beginning his career with Holy Cross.
When the 2026-27 men's basketball season tips off next fall, only three of Northwestern's 15 players will be carry-overs from the year prior.
The final domino from Northwestern's transfer exodus fell on Wednesday morning, as League Ready's Sam Kayser reported that sophomore guard Max Green intends to enter his name in the portal.
Green transferred to Northwestern after winning Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors at Holy Cross. During his lone season with the Wildcats, Green played in 23 games and made four starts, though he did not appear in NU's final 11 outings. Green averaged 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.7 steals per game on 37.0% shooting and 33.8% from deep.
The La Grange, Kentucky, native scored a season-high 16 points in just nine minutes against Cleveland State. Green knocked down four of his six triples, with several coming from way beyond the arc.
The anticipated departure marks the ninth transfer from Northwestern this cycle, the Wildcats' largest in the NIL and transfer portal era. Only rising junior Angelo Ciaravino and rising sophomores Jake West and Phoenix Gill remain from NU's 2025-26 roster, and all three have announced their plans to return for next season.
Green is the fifth Northwestern underclassman to enter the transfer portal, joining sophomore K.J. Windham and freshmen Tre Singleton, Tyler Kropp and Cade Bennerman. He is also the third player to transfer away from the Wildcats after transferring into the program last offseason. Juniors Arrinten Page and Jayden Reid helped form NU's three-man transfer class from a year ago, but both those two and Green are one-and-done in Evanston.
Senior guard Blake Smith and junior guard Jordan Clayton round out the group of nine transferring Wildcats after earning their degrees from Northwestern.
Chris Collins has already gotten to work rebuilding his roster ahead of a critical season for the Wildcats. He earned his first transfer commitment in Bellarmine wing Jack Karasinski on Tuesday, who led the Atlantic Sun in scoring. Northwestern has also been reported to host Cornell guard Jake Fiegen, Mount St. Mary's forward Luke McEldon, Northeastern guard LA Pratt and more this week.
As the roster currently stands, the 'Cats now have two guards — West and Gill — and two wings — Ciaravino and Karasinski. Northwestern was short-handed in the frontcourt last year, but Collins is starting fresh and has significant flexibility to construct next season's team as he sees fit. Targeting size at center and forward will undoubtedly be his next move.
