The Wildcats return to TD Arena this November, seeking to maintain their undefeated tournament legacy against a powerhouse field featuring Dayton, Oklahoma State, and Virginia Tech.
Northwestern men's basketball will return to the Charleston Classic this fall, the program announced Thursday, August 6. The Wildcats will be competing on November 20 and November 22 at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina.
The Wildcats are one of six teams in the tournament field, joining Dayton, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Utah and Virginia Tech. The event will feature three standalone games on each of the two competition days, with every team playing once on Friday and once on Sunday. Tournament matchups, tipoff times and ESPN network assignments will be announced at a later date.
Northwestern's appearance marks the program's second trip to the Charleston Classic and its first since 2011. The Wildcats captured the tournament championship in their lone previous appearance, defeating LSU, Tulsa and Seton Hall over three games. Former Northwestern standout Drew Crawford led the team with averages of 24 points and 6 rebounds per game, earning the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors.
The Charleston Classic is one of ESPN Events’ annual early-season college basketball tournaments and is held at TD Arena, home of the College of Charleston. The event brings together programs from multiple conferences each season, providing teams with an opportunity to face quality nonconference competition before league play begins. The 2026 field features representatives from the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and Atlantic 10.
The tournament also gives Northwestern another opportunity to strengthen its résumé early in the season. Neutral-site games against high-major opponents often carry added significance for teams looking to build their NCAA Tournament profile, making the Charleston Classic an important stop on the Wildcat’s nonconference schedule.
Although the bracket has not yet been released, Northwestern could face any of the five other participating programs over the two-game event. ESPN Events is expected to announce opening-round matchups, game times and television designations on ESPN platforms in the coming months.
The Wildcats will enter the tournament looking to build on the program's history in Charleston, where they remain undefeated after winning the 2011 championship. A second appearance also marks another opportunity for Northwestern to test itself against experienced competition before beginning Big Ten play later in the season.
