The Wildcats overcome early-season struggles, gearing up for the upcoming NCAA Tournament as No.1.
After upsetting No. 1-ranked teams during the season, the 'Cats earned their rightful place atop the bracket heading into postseason play.
Northwestern women's lacrosse secured the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NCAA women's lacrosse tournament, per the NCAA's official announcement on Sunday. With a first-round bye, the 'Cats will face the winner between James Madison and Notre Dame in the second round on May 10 at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
The NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship Subcommittee selected 29 teams to compete in the 2026 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
As the top-seeded team, the 'Cats boast the best RPI in the country and finished the season 15-3, including winning the Big Ten regular-season title and conference tournament championship. During the season, Northwestern defeated then-No. 1 teams North Carolina and Maryland, becoming the first program since Florida in 2012 to knock off multiple top-ranked opponents in a single season.
Northwestern's path to the top seed wasn't without turbulence. After opening with an upset loss to unranked Colorado 9-10 at home, the 'Cats stumbled through back-to-back defeats against Syracuse and Ohio State that raised questions about their championship credentials. But the 'Cats' proved the doubters wrong with a dominant late-season finish.
Led by Madison Taylor's historic offensive production, Northwestern rattled off eight consecutive wins to close the regular season. Taylor finished with 80 goals and 111 points in 18 games, continuing her assault on record books after breaking the NCAA single-season scoring mark last year with 109 goals. She's been the engine driving Northwestern's offense, but she hasn't done it alone.
Transfer goalie Jennika Cuocco proved to be the defensive anchor the 'Cats desperately needed. Her career-high 18 saves in the Big Ten Championship game โ the most in tournament history โ earned her Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after a hard-fought win over Michigan. Her 65.9% save percentage across the tournament was nothing short of spectacular.
Annabel Child brought veteran experience and clutch scoring, while Aditi Foster emerged as a reliable secondary threat with 40 goals on the season. The supporting cast made all the difference in Northwestern's ability to weather defensive pressure on Taylor.
James Madison will head to Evanston to face Notre Dame in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship. The game will be played at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, with the first draw set for 4 p.m. CT on Friday, May 8.
