Northwestern is projected to face Florida in the ReliaQuest Bowl, offering an intriguing potential Big Ten vs. SEC postseason matchup as the Wildcats continue their impressive season.

Northwestern football continues to gain national attention, and the Wildcats are now being linked to an intriguing postseason matchup against an SEC opponent.

In a recent college football bowl projection shared by On3’s Brett McMurphy, Northwestern was matched up against the Florida Gators in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

While plenty can change between now and the end of the regular season, the potential matchup provides another interesting storyline for a Northwestern team that has exceeded expectations through the first half of 2026.

The Wildcats currently sit at 5-1 after a thrilling 24-21 road victory over Michigan State, with head coach David Braun’s team continuing to find different ways to win.

And with Northwestern climbing into the national rankings, conversations surrounding the Wildcats’ postseason possibilities are becoming increasingly interesting.

Of course, the ultimate goal would be to continue winning and put themselves in a position to compete for a College Football Playoff berth.

But even if Northwestern falls short of that goal, an opportunity to face a program like Florida in a respected postseason bowl game would still be a significant accomplishment.

The ReliaQuest Bowl is an annual college football postseason game held at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Established in 1986, the game was previously known as the Hall of Fame Bowl and Outback Bowl before adopting its current name in 2022.

The bowl traditionally features a matchup between the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference, providing teams from two of college football’s strongest conferences an opportunity to compete on a national stage.

This season’s game is scheduled for Dec. 31, making it an exciting way for participating programs to close out the calendar year.

For Northwestern, facing Florida would present an opportunity to test itself against another recognizable college football program.

It would also give Braun’s team valuable postseason experience and a chance to finish its season with a bowl victory.

Interestingly, Northwestern has appeared in this bowl before, falling 38-35 to Auburn in overtime in the 2010 Outback Bowl.

A return to Tampa would give the Wildcats an opportunity to create a different ending.

However, there is still plenty of football to be played before Northwestern can begin thinking seriously about potential bowl destinations.

For now, the Wildcats’ focus should remain on taking things one game at a time, continuing to build momentum and getting healthy for the challenges ahead.

Still, seeing Northwestern included in conversations about notable postseason matchups is another encouraging sign of how far the program has come.

And whether the season ends with a College Football Playoff appearance or a matchup against an SEC opponent in Tampa, Northwestern has already given its fans plenty of reasons to be excited about what lies ahead.
