Northwestern received devastating injury news Tuesday, as offensive lineman Ezomo Oratokhai will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering an injury against Colorado.
Oratokhai went down during Northwestern’s 41-7 win over Colorado and was eventually carted off the field. He missed the Wildcats’ 29-23 loss to Indiana the following week, but Northwestern will now have to move forward without one of its most reliable offensive linemen for the rest of the season.
It is a significant loss for an offensive line that entered the year with Oratokhai as one of its most important returning pieces.
The 6-foot-4, 310-pound redshirt sophomore started all 13 games for Northwestern in 2025 and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention. He allowed zero sacks or quarterback hits over the final 12 games of the season and finished with an 81.5 PFF pass-blocking grade, which ranked 10th among Big Ten guards.
Oratokhai had quickly established himself as someone Northwestern could rely on up front.
After appearing in four games and making two starts as a true first-year in 2024, he took a major step forward the following season. He became the youngest starter on Northwestern’s offensive line and was also named to The Athletic’s midseason national All-Freshman team.
His development made him an important piece of Northwestern’s offensive line entering 2026, especially with Aidan Chiles taking over at quarterback and Chip Kelly installing a new offense. Now, the Wildcats will have to find a way to replace him.
That becomes even more important as Northwestern gets deeper into Big Ten play.
The Wildcats have shown through three games that they can move the football. Chiles has developed quickly in Kelly’s offense, while Northwestern has found success both through the air and on the ground.
Keeping Chiles protected will be crucial if that offensive success is going to continue.
Oratokhai’s absence also comes at a difficult time with Northwestern preparing for another major test against Penn State in the first game at the new Ryan Field. The Wildcats will now enter that matchup knowing one of their most dependable offensive linemen will not be returning this season.
It is a difficult loss for Northwestern and an unfortunate end to a season for a young lineman who had already established himself as one of the better players on the Wildcats’ offensive line.
The responsibility now shifts to the rest of the unit.
Northwestern has relied on a next-man-up mentality under head coach David Braun, and it will need that again. Whoever takes over Oratokhai’s role will have big shoes to fill as the Wildcats look to keep Chiles protected and continue the offensive progress they have shown early in the season.
For Oratokhai, the focus turns toward recovery. For Northwestern, the challenge is finding a way to replace one of the offensive line’s most reliable pieces for the remainder of the season.
