David Braun has landed his highest-rated recruit of the cycle.
The Wildcats went out of their usual Chicagoland pipeline for a highly-regarded 2027 recruit, but it ended off paying off with a big-time commitment.
Late on Monday night, four-star cornerback Cristian Mbamarah announced his intention to play for Northwestern at the next level. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound defensive back from Aurora, Colo., chose the 'Cats over offers from Duke and Stanford.
"First and foremost I wanna give all glory to God for making this possible," Mbamarah wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "I am truly blessed and honored to be in the position I am and I give 100% glory to the man above[.] I also wanna give all praise to my family and how they raised me! I’m 100% committed Go Wildcats!"
Mbamarah is the No. 1 player in Colorado and the No. 39 cornerback in his grade, according to Rivals. He is the first four-star player to commit to Northwestern for the Class of 2027 and just the third four-star recruit to pick the Wildcats under David Braun.
Interior lineman Owen Fors (2026) held a three-star composite ranking despite earning four-star designations from On3 and 247 Sports, while wide receiver Jaden McDuffie (2026) was a three-star prospect at the time of his commitment before exploding up the rankings during his senior season. Mbamarah similarly has a three-star composite grade due to three-star rankings by 247 Sports and ESPN, but will likely rise as the other sites update their projections this offseason.
The addition of Mbamarah — now Northwestern's top-rated commit — gives the Wildcats the No. 53 recruiting class in the nation in 2027, although that still ranks just 16th out of 18 Big Ten teams. NU's 2026 recruiting class ranked 13th, despite featuring McDuffie and Fors.
Northwestern was able to land Mbamarah with an official visit from May 29-31, in which he formed relationships with several members of the Wildcats' coaching staff. That includes Braun and defensive backs coach LaMarcus Hicks, who played two seasons for the Detroit Lions and is widely credited for the development of key players in Northwestern's secondary.
Last season for Cherokee Trail High School, Mbamarah recorded 65 tackles, nine pass breakups, a forced fumble and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown. Mbamarah has also competed in track and field, running the 100-meter dash in 10.53 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 21.96 seconds in 2025.
