Northwestern center Jackson Carsello has been named to the Rimington Trophy preseason watch list. After earning another year of eligibility, the veteran returns to anchor the Wildcats' offensive line as Chip Kelly's offense prepares for the 2026 season.
Northwestern center Jackson Carsello is receiving national recognition before the 2026 season even begins.
The veteran offensive lineman has been named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's most outstanding center in college football. The award recognizes excellence in performance, leadership and consistency throughout the season.
For Carsello, the recognition is another milestone in an offseason that has already been anything but ordinary.
Earlier this year, Carsello received a preliminary injunction that granted him another season of eligibility, allowing him to return to Evanston for the 2026 campaign after what many believed would be the end of his collegiate career.
His return immediately became one of Northwestern's biggest offseason victories, giving the Wildcats an experienced leader at one of the offense's most important positions.
Carsello Returns to Lead a Rebuilt Offensive Line
Carsello's importance only grew after Northwestern lost several key contributors along the offensive line.
NFL Draft selections Caleb Tiernan and Evan Beerntsen, along with veteran tackle Martes Lewis, accounted for more than 1,800 offensive snaps last season. Replacing that experience won't be easy, making Carsello's leadership even more valuable as the Wildcats work to rebuild the trenches during fall camp.
As the anchor of the offensive line, Carsello will be responsible for much more than blocking assignments.
The center plays a critical role in identifying defensive fronts, communicating protections and helping ensure the offensive line operates as one cohesive unit. With new starters expected to step into larger roles, Carsello's experience should help ease that transition throughout the season.
His ability to communicate and provide stability up front could become one of Northwestern's biggest advantages as the Wildcats replace several proven contributors.

Carsello's presence could also prove invaluable for Northwestern's new-look offense.
Head coach David Braun has yet to officially name Michigan State transfer Aidan Chiles the starting quarterback, meaning the Wildcats' quarterback competition remains open entering fall camp.
Regardless of who ultimately wins the job, Northwestern will need strong offensive line play to give its quarterbacks time to operate.
If Chiles earns the starting role as many expect, Carsello will be particularly important in helping provide a clean pocket while opening running lanes for Caleb Komolafe and the rest of Northwestern's backfield.
Those responsibilities become even more significant under new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, whose offenses have consistently emphasized tempo, execution and strong communication.
Kelly is tasked with installing a new offensive system in a relatively short period of time, making veteran players such as Carsello especially valuable as younger offensive linemen adjust to the demands of the new scheme.
Can Carsello Become a Rimington Trophy Contender?
Being named to the Rimington Trophy watch list does not guarantee Carsello will become a finalist, but it places him among the nation's centers worth watching entering the season.
For Carsello, the award would represent more than individual recognition.
A strong season could help validate his decision to return for another year while also giving Northwestern one of the country's most experienced centers to lead an offensive line undergoing significant change.
For the Wildcats, Carsello's performance could have a major impact on the success of the entire offense.
If he can provide consistent protection, help the new-look offensive line develop chemistry and serve as a leader in the trenches, Northwestern could give Kelly the foundation he needs to build an explosive offense.
With fall camp underway and the 2026 season quickly approaching, Carsello now has the opportunity to turn preseason recognition into postseason hardware while helping lead Northwestern into a new era of football.
