Northwestern head coach David Braun has earned a spot on the Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year watch list following the Wildcats' impressive 5-1 start.

Northwestern football continues to turn heads across the country, and this time, the recognition belongs to the man leading the program.

Wildcats head coach David Braun has been named to the 2026 Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year Award watch list, joining 27 other coaches from across college football.

And considering what Braun has accomplished at Northwestern, the recognition is well deserved.

The Wildcats currently sit at 5-1 following a thrilling 24-21 road victory over Michigan State, continuing what has been an impressive start to the 2026 season.

But Braun's impact goes far beyond the team's record.

Since taking over the program in 2023, Braun has established himself as a passionate, humble and determined leader who has helped bring a winning mentality back to Evanston.

His players consistently demonstrate a willingness to fight for one another, and that mentality has been evident throughout this season.

What Is the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award?

The Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year Award is one of college football's most prestigious coaching honors.

Presented annually by the American Heart Association, the award recognizes a head coach who demonstrates outstanding leadership, integrity, perseverance and success both on and off the football field.

The award honors legendary Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and celebrates coaches who make a positive impact on their players and the sport.

Last year's winner was Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti, who guided the Hoosiers to a historic undefeated national championship season.

This year's winner will be announced on January 27, 2027, in Houston, Texas. Interestingly, Braun is already familiar with the awards.

Following his remarkable first season at Northwestern in 2023, he received the inaugural Paul “Bear” Bryant Newcomer Coach of the Year Award.

Now, three years later, he is receiving consideration for the national honor.

Braun Continues to Prove He's the Right Leader for Northwestern

Braun's journey at Northwestern has been impressive.

He inherited a program facing significant uncertainty in 2023 and immediately guided the Wildcats to an 8-5 record, including a Las Vegas Bowl victory over Utah.

Northwestern experienced some struggles in 2024, finishing 4-8, before bouncing back with a 7-6 record and another bowl victory in 2025.

Now, with the Wildcats sitting at 5-1 in 2026, Braun has compiled a 24-20 overall record as Northwestern's head coach, including two bowl victories.

Those numbers tell part of the story, but the culture Braun has developed might be even more important.

One thing that continues to stand out about Braun is his personality and approach to coaching.

He brings tremendous passion and energy to the sidelines while remaining humble and focused on the work ahead.

He doesn't seem interested in celebrating accomplishments for too long. Instead, his focus remains on improving every week and making sure his players are prepared for the next challenge.

That mentality has carried over to the team.

Northwestern has demonstrated resilience throughout the season, particularly in its comeback victory over Michigan State.

Despite trailing 21-13 in the fourth quarter and dealing with injuries to key players, the Wildcats never gave up.

They fought back, made crucial defensive plays and ultimately secured the victory on Jackson Kleather's game-winning field goal.

That type of performance says a lot about the culture Braun has established.

His players continue to believe in one another, remain disciplined and find ways to win even when things aren't going perfectly.

It's difficult not to appreciate what Braun is building in Evanston.

And Northwestern has already demonstrated its confidence in him, agreeing to a contract extension through the 2031 season earlier this year.

Plenty Still to Prove

Of course, Braun and the Wildcats still have plenty of work ahead. Northwestern returns home Saturday to face Rutgers before entering a challenging stretch.

But regardless of what happens over the remainder of the season, Braun's inclusion on the national Coach of the Year watch list is another significant recognition for Northwestern football.

He's already proven he can lead the Wildcats through difficult circumstances, develop a winning culture and get his players to compete for one another.

And with Northwestern continuing to gain momentum, it's becoming increasingly clear that Braun is the right man to lead this program forward.

The national recognition is deserved. Now, the challenge is to keep building on it.
