Northwestern safety Robert Fitzgerald earns first-team midseason All-American honors from On3 and AP as the Wildcats await their defensive leader's return from injury.

Northwestern football continues to gain national recognition, and one of the Wildcats’ most important defensive players is receiving some well-deserved attention.

Safety Robert Fitzgerald has been named a first-team midseason All-American by both On3 and the Associated Press, recognizing his outstanding performances through the first half of the 2026 college football season.

And for anyone who has watched Northwestern this season, the recognition should come as no surprise.

Fitzgerald has established himself as one of the most impactful defensive players in the Big Ten, consistently making plays while providing valuable leadership to David Braun’s defense.

Through five games, Fitzgerald has recorded 45 tackles, two interceptions, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

His ability to make an impact in different areas of the game has been a major reason behind Northwestern’s impressive 5-1 start.

Against Indiana, Fitzgerald recorded 13 tackles, helping keep the Wildcats competitive in a difficult road matchup.

He followed that performance with an interception against Penn State before delivering one of his biggest plays of the season against Ball State.

Fitzgerald intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown, helping Northwestern build a commanding lead in its 45-14 victory.

But his impact goes well beyond the statistics.

Fitzgerald is one of the most experienced players on Northwestern’s defense, and his ability to communicate, make adjustments and provide leadership in the secondary is something the Wildcats rely on.

And his absence against Michigan State showed just how valuable that presence can be.

Fitzgerald missed Saturday’s 24-21 victory due to injury, and Northwestern’s defense faced several difficult moments throughout the afternoon.

The Wildcats allowed Michigan State to build a 21-13 fourth-quarter lead before rallying to secure the victory.

While Northwestern ultimately found a way to win, Fitzgerald’s absence was noticeable, particularly for a secondary that has benefited from his experience and playmaking ability throughout the season.

Of course, one player does not determine an entire defensive performance, but having someone of Fitzgerald’s caliber on the field can make a significant difference.

His ability to recognize plays, communicate with teammates and make tackles in open space provides an important sense of stability.

That is exactly why his health will be something to monitor as Northwestern prepares for the second half of its schedule.

The Wildcats return home Saturday to face Rutgers before entering a difficult stretch that includes Oregon, Iowa and Ohio State.

With Northwestern continuing to climb the national rankings and hoping to remain in the College Football Playoff conversation, getting one of its defensive leaders back would provide a major boost.

Fitzgerald’s midseason All-American honors are a reflection of the impact he has made, but they also highlight just how important he is to Northwestern’s continued success.

The Wildcats have shown they can overcome injuries and find ways to win.

But there is no question that Northwestern is a stronger defensive team when Fitzgerald is on the field.

And as the competition gets tougher, the Wildcats will certainly hope their All-American safety can return sooner rather than later.
