Northwestern's star defensive back and team captain has extra motivation heading into Friday night.

The Northwestern Wildcats are preparing to face coach Curt Cignetti's defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers in a battle between two undefeated teams on Friday night.

The Wildcats' defense will have its work cut out for it against one of the nation's best offenses led by TCU transfer QB Josh Hoover and star receivers Nick Marsh and Charlie Becker.

One of the Wildcats' best hopes for stopping Indiana is starting safety Robert Fitzgerald, a 2026 team captain whose comments to media were shared on Thursday. Fitzgerald has an extra source of motivation headed into the game as he prepares to lead his fellow Wildcats into gridiron battle.

"A Lot of Responsibility"

Fitzgerald was voted as 'The Wildcat' by his teammates headed into the 2026 college football season which typically includes wearing the No. 1 jersey, although Fitzgerald chose to keep his familiar No. 6 instead.

The gravity of Fitzgerald's honor was not lost on the Wildcats defensive back.

"That's a lot of responsibility, but you know, I'm just super honored and grateful to be voted as No. 1, it's not something I take lightly by any means at all," he said to Anna Watson of NNN Sports.

"It's really just pushed me even more to show up as the best version of myself every single day for the men on this team. The way that I work every day...I just, go as hard as I can for as long as I can every single day, and that's kind of the Wildcat way."

Impact Plays Pile Up for Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald has made several impact plays so far during his redshirt senior senior with the Wildcats. The Dallas, Texas native continues to place himself in competition for postseason college football honors as he forges a new path ahead for coach David Braun's team.

Fitzgerald, who is not related to Michigan State coach and former Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald, had 114 tackles last season and has 25 through three games with Northwestern so far this year. He also has a fumble recovery and a pass break-up.

Northwestern's back line will be tested like never before on Friday night against Hoover and the Hoosiers, as starting defensive back Braden Turner was listed as doubtful for game. Turner's potential absence would pose problems for the Wildcats secondary as they shuffle pieces in an attempt to cover Becker, Marsh, former Michigan Wolverines national champion Tyler Morris and the rest of the Hoosiers' wide receiving corps.

Fitzgerald is no stranger to added pressure, and typically performs his best under the bright lights. He will give it his all on Friday night, giving him and his team an opportunity to pull off a program-changing win over a prime College Football Playoff contender.
