With the countdown to Northwestern's home opener officially underway, the Wildcats got their first extended look inside the nearly completed Ryan Field on Tuesday, and excitement surrounding the program continues to grow.

Media members toured the stadium as Northwestern head coach David Braun, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and defensive coordinator Tim McGarigle met with reporters from midfield, offering a glimpse into the program's future just months before the Wildcats officially return home.

The transformation is nearly complete.

The turf has been installed, purple seating now fills the stadium and only finishing touches remain around the exterior. After spending the past two seasons at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, the Wildcats are preparing to return to a completely reimagined Ryan Field.

Already, the stadium is generating significant buzz across college football.

From recruits visiting campus to media members touring the facility, Ryan Field has quickly become one of Northwestern's biggest attractions, giving the Wildcats another selling point as they continue building for the future.

Braun made it clear that Ryan Field represents much more than a new stadium.

It's another step toward building Northwestern into a consistent Big Ten contender.

"To think that October 2nd is just around the corner," Braun said. "We have an opportunity as a football program to be playing in the best venue in all of football."

While Ryan Field won't be the largest stadium in the conference, Braun believes that was never the objective.

"We aren't the biggest," Braun said. "We delivered on being the best."

Braun understands that an elite stadium alone won't produce victories, but he believes it gives Northwestern another competitive advantage. 

The facility has already made a strong impression on recruits, many of whom have been surprised by both the design and attention to detail throughout the stadium. As Northwestern continues competing against some of the nation's top programs for talent, Ryan Field now gives the Wildcats another powerful recruiting tool.

Braun also enters the season encouraged by the continuity within his roster.

One of Northwestern's biggest offseason goals was retaining its core players, and Braun said the Wildcats accomplished that by bringing back 27 of the 30 players who logged more than 100 meaningful snaps last season before adding transfer talent around that experienced foundation.

Even with another challenging Big Ten schedule awaiting, Braun believes his team is prepared to embrace the challenge rather than shy away from it.

Ultimately, the stadium's success will be measured by what happens on Saturdays.

"It's our job to put the best team on this field," Braun said.

While Braun focused on the program's future, Kelly's attention remains on building an offense capable of taking advantage of it.

The veteran offensive coordinator praised the design of Ryan Field, noting how much thought went into every detail of the stadium.

Even standing on the field, Kelly said the stadium's structure noticeably limits the wind, creating an ideal environment for players once games begin this fall.

Still, Kelly knows beautiful facilities don't score touchdowns.

His focus now shifts toward helping Northwestern establish its offensive identity during preseason camp.

With quarterback Aidan Chiles taking over the offense alongside returning stars Caleb Komolafe and Griffin Wilde, Kelly believes the Wildcats have an exciting group to work with.

Training camp will ultimately determine exactly who Northwestern becomes offensively, but Kelly is eager to begin that process as the team continues building chemistry.

Ryan Field represents far more than a new home. It symbolizes the next chapter of Northwestern football. 

It represents the beginning of a new chapter.

After back-to-back winning seasons under Braun, a bowl victory in 2025 and one of the nation's most respected offensive minds joining the coaching staff, optimism surrounding the program continues to grow.

McGarigle has experienced that transformation firsthand.

Northwestern's all-time leading tackler remembers playing in the original Ryan Field. Now, he has a front-row seat as the next generation of Wildcats prepares to usher in a new era inside one of college football's newest venues. 

The excitement is undeniable.

The stadium is nearly finished, the roster is largely intact and expectations continue rising throughout Evanston.

Now, Northwestern's attention turns toward preseason camp before officially opening what Braun believes will become one of the premier venues in college football.

If the Wildcats can match the excitement surrounding Ryan Field with winning football, Northwestern's new era could begin the moment the doors officially open on Oct. 2.
