Northwestern's Future Receives Optimistic Projection After Transfer Haul

David Braun made his feelings clear after wrapping up his 2025 season in the GameAbove Sports Bowl: Northwestern should be contending for a Big Ten Championship.

In response, the Wildcats made moves like they meant it. NU went out and signed transfers from Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida State, Michigan and more, showing that the 'Cats aren't content to be the punching bag for the rest of the conference.

Northwestern's upcoming schedule this fall looks brutal. The delayed opening of NU's new $850 million football stadium means the Wildcats have an early Week 2 bye, and thus, will be forced to play 11 consecutive games without a break. However, the future still looks bright for Northwestern football.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg ranked all 68 Power Four teams based on their outlook over the next two seasons, and Northwestern's projection surpassed the expectations that many other outlets and analyses have given this offseason.

The Wildcats came in 49th. That may not seem high, but it's nine spots higher than the program ranked last year and puts Northwestern ahead of conference foes Wisconsin (No. 55), Rutgers (No. 56), Maryland (No. 58), Michigan State (No. 62) and Purdue (No. 67).

"Northwestern's ability to admit transfers has loosened significantly the past two years, and the team added some important players in [Aidan] Chiles, [Grant] Seagren, Oklahoma linebacker Kobie McKinzie and tight ends Luke Dehnicke (Minnesota-Duluth) and Alex Honig (UConn)," Rittenberg wrote. "The team lost gifted pass rusher Anto Saka to Texas A&M and tight end Hunter Welcing to Ohio State but mostly retained who it wanted, especially in the secondary with safety Robert Fitzgerald and others. Northwestern surprisingly didn't add a transfer receiver, which could sting, but incoming recruit Jaden McDuffie should help in the coming seasons."

In all, the Wildcats landed 17 transfers from the portal. In addition to the five players Rittenberg mentioned, Northwestern should also see significant contributions from running backs Gavin Sawchuk (Florida State) and Mar'Kel Porter (Bowling Green), cornerbacks Brenden Deasfernandes (Central Michigan) and Montae Pate (Weber State), edge rushers Jamaal Johnson (UCF) and Dominic Kirks (Ohio State) and offensive linemen David Anchondo (Saginaw Valley State) and Arkel Anugwom (Alabama).

Braun's squad will likely be set at the quarterback position this fall between Chiles (Michigan State) and Nicco Marchiol (West Virginia), but questions remain about the team's long-term future under center. Ryan Boe was shaky in limited snaps as a passer, while true freshman Johnny O'Brien is a complete unknown.

Only time will tell whether Northwestern is starting down a sustainable path of success or not.
