The Wildcats brought in 16 players from the transfer portal. Did they get the correct ones?

While the transfer portal is still technically open for teams to recruit from, Northwestern appears to be putting the finishing touches on its 2026 roster. David Braun and general manager Christian Sarkisian have already inked the largest transfer portal class in program history, as 16 players have committed to NU during this cycle.

The Wildcats are currently slated to have 113 players, meaning Braun will need to cut at least eight before next season to fit under the new 105-man roster limit imposed by the House vs. NCAA settlement. This doesn't necessarily rule out Northwestern adding more transfers this spring, but it does mean that more players would have to be cut.

Below is a complete breakdown of the 52 offensive players expected to be on Northwestern's spring camp roster. Did the 'Cats fill all of their positions of need? You make the call:

Quarterbacks (6)

Transfers: Aidan Chiles (Sr.)

Returners: Gavin Frakes (Gr.), Ryan Boe (R-So.), Sean Winton (R-So.), Marcus Romain (R-Fr.)

Freshmen: Johnny O'Brien

Aidan Chiles has the most experience of the group from his time at Oregon State and Michigan State, and is likely the favorite to win the starting job over Ryan Boe. Keep an eye out for lefty freshman Johnny O'Brien, though, who starred as a three-year starter at Fremd High School (Palatine, IL).

Running Backs (7)

Transfers: Gavin Sawchuk (Gr.)Mar'Kel Porter (R-So.)

Returners: Joseph Himon II (Gr.), Caleb Komolafe (R-Jr.), Robby Preckel (So.), Daniel Anderson (R-Fr.)

Freshmen: Sean Morris

Caleb Komolafe and Joseph Himon seek to benefit the most from the hiring of offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, as a more dynamic passing game should make both of their lives easier. Gavin Sawchuk was productive at both Oklahoma and Florida State.

Wide Receivers (14)

Transfers: None

Returners: Griffin Wilde (Sr.), Frank Covey IV (R-Jr.), Ricky Ahumaraeze (R-Jr.), Camp Magee (R-Jr.), Drew Wagner (Jr.), Hayden Eligon II (Jr.), Chase Farrell (R-So.), Carson Grove (R-So.), Cam Russell (R-So.), Dube Enongene (R-Fr.), Brennan Saxe (R-Fr.), Braden Blueitt (R-Fr.)

Freshmen: Jaden McDuffie, Keaton Reinke

The Wildcats have not signed any transfers at their weakest position group — a bold choice by Braun and Sarkisian, regardless of whether it was intentional. Northwestern appears to be betting on Hayden Eligon's late-season breakout and more consistency from Drew Wagner alongside star pass-catcher Griffin Wilde. Jaden McDuffie is an intriguing prospect out of Edgewater, Maryland, having risen to four-star status after his commitment to NU.

Tight Ends (8)

Transfers: Alex Honig (Gr.), Luke Dehnicke (R-So.)

Returners: Chris Petrucci (Gr.), Blake Van Buren (Gr.), Patrick Schaller (R-So.), Noah LaPorte (R-Fr.), Tyler Kielmeyer (R-Fr.)

Freshmen: Tom McGlinchey

Northwestern signed a pair of tight end transfers in 6-foot-7 Alex Honig and Division II All-American Luke Dehnicke. Of the Wildcats' five returning tight ends, none have recorded a collegiate catch.

Offensive Linemen (17)

Transfers: David Anchondo (R-Jr.), Grant Seagren (R-Jr.), Arkel Anugwom (R-Jr.)

Returners: Deuce McGuire (Gr.), Anthony Birsa (R-Jr.), Ezomo Oratokhai (R-So.), Jace Borcherding (R-So.), Dennis Rahouski (R-So.), Idrys Cotton (R-So.), Michael O'Connell (R-Fr.), Trey Boyd (R-Fr.)

Freshmen: Jack Fuchs, Owen Fors, Leighton Burbach, Jacob Miller, Owen Jakubczak, Hayden Flavin

Four of Northwestern's five starters on the offensive line are graduating, leaving Ezomo Oratokhai as the lone returner. The three transfers — David Anchondo, Grant Seagren and Ariel Anugwom — will likely compete for the starting tackle jobs. Deuce McGuire and Anthony Birsa are the favorites to shore up the Wildcats' interior.
