Despite elite pass protection and high-end talent, the Irish offensive line battles inconsistent run blocking as coach Joe Rudolph leans on repetition to unlock this unit's dominance.
Through four games this season, the Notre Dame offensive line hasn't looked like the dominant group we thought they'd be to start the season. This offseason, they made the move to kick Anthonie Knapp inside to left guard and Guerby Lambert out to right tackle which fit the skillset of both players extremely well. In pass protection, this unit has been great, but it's the production on the ground that has left room for concern.
Notre Dame offensive line coach Joe Rudolph is in a pivotal season with the Fighting Irish. Now, he has the talent to have a Joe Moore Award-contending group, but the production now has to matchup the potential. After a rocky start, the 4th-year offensive line coach likes the direction they're heading in.
"I think overall, the idea that you keep getting better is pretty cool," Rudolph shared. "I think the group is doing that, you're banking reps of each scheme. You’re banking reps of each protection. And the more reps you get, the better understanding you have of not only how to do your job, but how to do it in a way where you really complement the guys around you."
Continued progress is something we've seen consistently from a Rudolph-led offensive line, even early struggles in the run game. Last season's rough start might have been masked by Jeremiyah Love's exceptional finish, but the evolution of the run game is something Rudolph is continuing to focus on with each passing week of the season.
"It's the same as the groups we've had," Rudolph said. "They’re no different from any groups we've had. They're doing what you ask them to do. There is a genuine way in which the (position) groups complement each other, right? Receivers complementing quarterbacks, quarterbacks for the receivers, the line complementing the backs and the backs complementing the line.
"You always want to maximize whatever opportunity that you have," Rudolph continued. "At times we've maximized it, and at times we haven't. But we've been we've been pretty efficient. The more guys that play, the more guys that have to learn how to work together, and the more you're trying to fit the right schemes into what you do and why you do it. But total trust in this group of kids, man. This group of kids wants it, and they'll continue to refine. They'll continue to work together, and I think we'll continue to bring out the best of each other.”
We can agree to disagree on a couple of things. This unit is not 'the same as the groups they've had'. This offensive line is bigger and more talented as a unit than in years prior. I also don't believe that the run game has been 'efficient'. They currently rank No. 91 in the country in yards per rush, an efficiency statistic.
But what we can agree on is that the more guys play, the more they have to learn. One player that's been learning a lot through four starts is sophomore left tackle Will Black who has had some 'first year starter' type of moments but has also flashed the type of player he will become at Notre Dame.
"At some point you’ve just got to be violent and physical every play," Rudolph explained. "He’s growing to that. You see it and then you see him getting it done. You see him cut it loose and being violent and playing that way. So just keeping him in that mode of confident and cutting it loose. I’m proud of where he’s at. After four games, he’s playing his tail off. I like where the kids are at. We’ve just got to keep pressing those two goals, prepare ourselves to do great against North Carolina and get better.”
The offensive line is certainly not a finished product, but the 2026 season is far from over. Their best football is still in front of them. This unit has been really, really good in pass protection. Now, it's getting the run game, scheme and production up to speed. Once they accomplish that goal, this unit will be humming on all cylinders.
